Nikon NIKKOR Z 600mm f/6.3 VR S in Normal Vibration Mode.

I'm hand holding subject lens using a Nikon Z8 camera in normal selected vibration mode. Shutter speed is fast enough on still subject handholding. When focusing on a subject, the subject will move when depress the shutter button. It appears to jump off center when looking through the viewfinder. Resulting image is sharp. Only does it when handholding. When mounted on a tripod it doesn't do it. With other handholding vibration modes image doesn't move. Anyone experience this?

It’s normal with many lenses. Use Sport if you don’t want it jumping.

Image changes position in final shot.

The VR system has a finite range of compensation and in order to optimize the outcome, the lens VR group and sensor are centered just before the exposure begins. Thus the framing may be slightly different than intended. Normal mode optimizes the stabilization outcome while Sport mode makes a compromise between the stabilization efficacy and ease of use. During composition the VR elements stay close to center position and it does less compensation of vibration, but this makes the use of the camera for action subjects much easier as the image is not jumping around in the viewfinder. I basically always use Sport mode if I am using VR and if it is available.

As Scott and others have observed, this is completely normal behavior in Nikon's "normal" VR mode as the elements are recentering in between shots. I use "sport" mode for 90% of my shooting (which is normally moving WL) and reserve "normal" for extreme low light, hand held shots. This occurs with other systems as well and for a visual presentation/explanation, watch Steve's video and jump to the 9:00 minute mark:

Never had this happen with any of my other lenses, Nikon or Sony. Just with this PF lens. I have had the 300mm PF lens on DSLR cameras. This is new to me with Nikon a mirrorless camera body and a lens that has different vibration reduction modes.

I've seen it on basically every tele length Z lens I've tried on my Z8 and Z9.

The amount of viewfinder jumping in Normal VR mode is essentially a reflection of your hand holding steadiness. The reason you didn’t see this on DSLRs is because there was no sensor stabilization, only lens VR. Plus, a 600mm lens is much harder to handhold than an 300mm lens. Others have explained why this is happening and that the solution is to use Sport VR mode.
