p.1 #1 · Alternative RF 100-500 Hood

Most Canon style hoods are available from generiacs, but I'm not finding any for the 100-500, i.e., ET-83F (W III). I don't want to use a shorter hood, just one close in size of course that does not block the light rays.

Yup, I use and ES-83 on mine. It's made for the 50mm 1.2.

For longer lenses I have always used screw-in metal lens hoods in preference to the bulky OEM hoods. My hoods never come off the lenses; they go in the bag without lens caps.

On rare occasions when working in very bright conditions, I do use the real hood for maximum shading. But for a zoom lens, any hood must be designed not to vignette at the shortest focal length, and so maximum shading is an illusion anyway.

Ditched the hoods for both RF 70-200 and RF 100-500 on day one.

I use a generic lens hood from JJC available on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B015GO28VI?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_5

It's listed as a replacement for the 100-400 II lens hood, but works perfectly for the 100-500 lens too, and reverses perfectly for storage / travel.

It's less expensive than the Canon hood and is high quality... I've been using it for over 2 years.

Since I got the RF70-200/4L I use the 50/1.2 ES-83 on it and the RF70-200/4 ET-83G on the 100-500. A nice fit.

I have one of those somewhere as a replacement for an EF 100-400 II hood. I did not realize they were backwards compatible with the RF 100-500! If there is no vignetting it should be fine.

I know some people like short lens hoods, but my use case is to semi-permanently attach a custom raincover to the hood. I don't want to mess up a spare $100 Canon hood for the limited water use and I don't need the filter slot on it.

Found it in a box, yes, I used a JJC LH-83F for a year before I found the ES-83. It´s as long but about 10mm narrower, has shallow petals and is of a more organic shape than the sharp angled original hood. Did all it should.

The hood from the original ef 100-400 L IS lens fits perfectly. It doesn’t have the ‘window’ for a polarizer and it doesn’t lock on the lens. It is quite inexpensive and there is no ‘window’ that accidentally opens up. I’ve used one for several years and have had no trouble at all.

JJC LH-83D works flawlessly with my rf 100-500L.
