p.3 #1 · Which Lux ... ??? (Game)

Don't get me wrong, as I own over 10 Lux's, but also find I am liking the Noktons too.

Once I sent back the Noctilux 35/1.2 (unopened) I have decided to try other brands offering lenses similar to Leica offerings.

Heck I have been buying LLL lenses since they first came out and like the character of their offerings, even though I bought the SR 35/1.4, etc.

Frankly, after buying Fred's old 21/1.4 I have decided to add other VM lenses to my inventory. Thus I got the 35/1.2. Even though I have the Lux 75/1.4, I decided to try the VM 75/1.5 too.

Optically, it's still the Summilux-M 35 vII. I grew to hate everything else about the lens (chonky focus tab, wings at the front to control the aperture that are hard to reach with the hood attached, which you need if you need to use one series VII filter) but I still love the optics.

That said, the samples I've seen from the new Noctilux 35/1.2 are very attractive. Maybe not $10k attractive, but it turned my head. I'm glad Zeiss released the Otus 35. It stopped me from doing something stupid like putting my name and credit card number in on

I love the focus tab on the Lux FLE v1 because I use to set zone focus without seeing to focus when working fast on the street.

I'm not opposed to Voigt lenses and have shot with them and own one now but for 35mm I prefer the Lux FLE.

Why Lux? How about Nokton too?

Just as an FYI ... my OP did say "any brand".

So, if the Nokton is the Voigt counterpart to the Leica Lux, I'm not quibbling about the diff mfr's naming choices. I realize that Lux is the Leica namesake for those faster lenses, and most direct application for Leica's specific approach.

If your choice is for a Nokton ... the point of the game is for you to declare YOUR chosen "only one" ... go for it.

As an aside ... this has reminded me of yesteryear's Yashica Lynx 14.

OK, no vote here as just one is like only owning just one lens. Heck I have 2 dry cabinets full of gear and the reason I have many M lenses is because I like each one for different reasons.

One day this and another day that. No one mentioned the LTM 7.3cm f1.9 which could be described as the Lux of its day, 93 years ago.

Once I fully retire I will probably sell most of my stuff except the M 10 Mono and the 35Lux FLE and my 24 2.8 Elmarit. For my personal work I would be perfectly happy with the 35 Lux only.. And who knows that maybe what actully happens. My usual street and travel kit.
M 10 Mono, 35 Lux FLE v1 and a couple of extra batteries and a charger. All fits in this small bag. One word for it. Liberarting.

I learned a new word today: “Liberarting.” May I borrow it, on occasion? I will provide proper credit to the artist who coined it.

Each on their own of course - but I plan to do exactly the opposite when I retire. Hold on as much as possible on my existing photo gear because this will be the time when I will make most use of it!

From the front page of my website...

Now retired I have the luxury of making images entirely for myself.

That said, I wonder how many professional creatives actually truly "retire", rather than just change emphasis?

In my case this doesn't apply since I have a totally different full time job unrelated to photography. Photography always has been a hobby of mine and only sometimes a bit of a part-time job with workshops I instructed for fun. It won't be different in the retirement I am planning to do. I never wanted nor plan to do photography as full-time profession.

I have the 28, 35, and 50 Lux lenses - if only one it would be the 35 as it's the most versatile. For rendering it's the 28. But on a desert island it's the 35.

Ha ha. I knew I should have trade marked that.

No decisions to be made. Just go out and work. Also using the same equipment all the time I truly become one with it. And it helped me develop a visual signature. Along with the way I compose and process.

My job full time has been photography since graduating from college. I worked professionally to support my family and it's paid for my equipment over the years and supported my personal work which I will do until I can't do it anymore. I have been lucky and have had some success with my personal work but not enough to give the family a decent standard of living. I know what my work looks like and I know the tools I need to achieve that so anything else isn't necessary. I don't need all the stuff I have to use for what I do for a living. So when that part ends no need to keep it. Some photographers like a lot of gear. Nothing wrong with that. But I have been more of a minimalist when it comes to that.
