Buying a camera for a lens...

p.1 #1 · Buying a camera for a lens...

I haven't had synergy with a lens since the 65mm that was glued to my Mamiya 7 camera over a decade ago. Something about that lens just always worked with what I was making pictures of and I never bought any other lens for that system.

A little over a year ago, I bought a Thypoch 28mm 1.4 for M-mount on lark and on discount. I don't have an M camera, but reviews made it seem like would adapt well, so I got it to use with a Sony. I don't want to argue about whether it's an amazing lens or not, or if there are better options - I'm sure there are - but the lens just resonated with me; I fell in love with it's character and it's wide field of view, and I made a number of images that I really, really like. Problem is, after the initial honeymoon phase was over, the smeary corners below F/11 began to bother me and I shelved it.

Fast forward to today and I have bought and sold a number of other manual lenses for my Sony, but I still have the Thypoch in it's box and I can't seem to get rid of it; I keep thinking it's just too good and right for me and I am drawn to use it again and I am considering buying a camera just to use this lens.

I know, I know, just buy an M, but I use a strong lens prescription and rangefinders were always too fussy for me in the end, and financially it's also frankly just too much of a stretch for a single lens use case. So, I have settled on two options:

1. a Used Leica SL2-S or

2. A Nikon Zf.

My concern is IQ and especially those corners. I wonder if folks here have used either of these cameras with the Thypoch or another 28mm? Which would you recommend I buy? Cost is not that dissimilar, so really the only barrier is my inexperience with which system will adapt an M-mount lens better.

What about a Kolari modded Sony?

Yeah, I've considered it, but I have a bunch of lenses for my Sony, and buying another Sony and adding the Kolari mod would cost about the same if not more than just getting an SL2-S, non?

None of the mirrorless options will match sensor stack specs of Leica M digital, but apparently the SL system and maybe Nikon are closest. I'd pick based on what either of those systems can offer you beyond use with the Thypoch.

The other option is get the mirrorless version of the Thypoch 28, though it's unclear if it's actually optically optimized for each mirrorless mount in which it is offered to match its performance on Leica M.

My understanding is that those versions of this lens have not been optimized. Too bad, otherwise this would have been simpler in the end.

Take a look at the original SL601. That camera is still relevant today. Great EVF and it was engineered to work well with M mount lenses…it even outperforms the M10 with some lenses, such as the 28 Lux.

Keep using it if it is working for you

Corners are great but you don't really need extreme corners even on landscape, really, even though landscape needs good corners more. Just depends on how far into the corners and what you're doing, even then if youre getting great results who cares, for the most part

I have one lens I quit using over lens tests. Not very smart. Really need to start using it again, got a lot of good photos using that lens.

We know the Thypoch e-mount is not optimized for e. Bastian also reported that Thypoch made optical adjustments for porting the m-mount lenses—at least at the time the 28 and 35 were released.

@ButteredToast

Modded Sony is the way to go I have a Thypoch’s 28/1.4 and CV 28/1.5 (m versions) and use them on a modded Sony along with film. I like using modded Sony’s better than Leica’s digital RF’s, price aside.

Without fuss-

The Nikon or the Leica is your best option- Leica being the best from an IQ perspective-

Also pick the Leica for the easiest and best menu system on the planet. I think you would be shocked at the lack of embedded menus and also the removal of confusion coming from Sony

Nikon does have great MF aids as well and the adaptor is only 89 bucks- https://ttartisan.store/products/m-z-6bit-adapter-ring

Will give focus confirmation

Beyond that- What other lenses would you like to try out? Lots of cool Sigma options coming on L mount etc. Nikon has its own great lenses. Cheers and Good Luck!

Why not thin mod a cheaper Zf and get focus aids and focus confirmation that Sony doesn't even offer

They hamstrung themselves for small bodies with the Z mount size, considering it's 20% bigger than E.

True—makes the lenses bigger too. It’s why I have never bought in. Still, I wonder if they will release a smaller FF body at some point.

Comes all down to the question: " What to do with a good M lens but when not willing to pay high cost for a Leica M camera?". I was exactly in the same boat in 2014 when I purchased my first M lens used - a Leica 50/2.0 Vers. V - to attach to my Sony A7R to work with smaller sized manual focus lenses on mirrorless years before I decided to get my first Leica M - film based, not digital. Couple things to consider from my experience adapting M lenses on MLC:

+ Every kind of adapter ring between MLC and M lens will no longer keep the M lens in the same position compared to mounting this lens directly to a M camera. Especially when trying to get used to focus tab positions for focus metering, this is an issue.

+ With 28 mm focal length, you enter the uncertainty area of image quality with adapted M lenses on a MLC. Corner fringing and purple casts could become a common issue. The wider open the lens pupil - which in this case at f/1.4 it is - the better to avoid these kind of image issues with the FF sensor.

I have used for years software fixes in PP top compensate issues with adapted M lenses on my FF-based MLC. Examples were Cornerfix and LR plugins - they all did a good job especially removing purple corner casts, but it was a time consuming process adding up with each digital photo. In 2019 I decided to make the plunge and got my first digital M used which I continue using at this point - the M-E 240. This is my recommendation: you can go with either a Nikon Zf or SL, but you will always deal with adapters, and it likely won't stay with just one M lens - other M lenses will follow in your lens collection, and potential image quality issues might also increase with other - especially wider - lenses used. I recommend to go for a different choice: get a digital M but not one of the latest versions which are super expensive. For good price/quality ratio there is nothing wrong to go with either a standard M10 or M 240 based series. If you have the funds, then my recommendation is actually to consider the M EV-1 camera. Very expensive but M-mount and MLC based in case you prefer over rangefinder focus.

I just assumed a used Sony would be out there for a decent price. If doing new, I definitely don't disagree on using a Z.

Just vacationed with the Mamiya 7ii. Quite a special camera and lenses, but the experience of shooting it would be very different than buying a used EV-1 after the M-12 comes out later this year, or early 27.

I'd look at this...

Nikon z7 from UPP (Roberts) for $979

...and get it modded by Kolari. You get a better sensor than either of your other options for about the price of either of your other options.
