I've used Customize dials/control ring on my R5II to set the control ring to Select AF area for both stills and movie shooting. It works fine when shooting stills, but seems to have no effect when shooting movies.
I noticed this earlier today when using the Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with my EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM, and I've tested it now with my RF 24-70mm F2.8L IS USM and RF 100-500 F4.5-7.1 L, and see the same behavior
With the Still photo shooting/movie recording switch set to movie, I set the control ring to Set ISO speed, which I also have on Quick Control Dial 1 (the back dial), and found that both worked to change the ISO, but when I changed the control ring back to Select AF area, it still doesn't seem to do anything.

I just tried it in my R5 MKII with 200-800 mounted. It worked. Are you 1/2 pressing your shutter button to work with your control ring? Do you have the in camera viewfinder view enabled to show the focus area. If you have a screen that has some things turned off in the viewfinder, it might not show. But it does work on mine, so it is probably just some other setting you have that stops you from seeing it.

Thanks Dave. It's good to know it worked for you. I do see the focus area in the viewfinder and on the back screen (I didn't know it was possible to turn off showing the focus area). I wasn't 1/2 pressing the shutter button when I turned the control ring, but I just tried that and it didn't make any difference. I use back-button focus (the OF-ON button), so I have half-press of the shutter button (in movie mode) set to Metering Only. I did try pressing the the OF-ON button while turning the control ring, and it still doesn't work. I also tried changing half-press of the shutter button in movie mode back to Meter+Servo AF, but that didn't work either.
I'm mystified as to what other setting might be causing this problem. I may have to backup my current settings to the card, reset to factory settings and reload my settings, but I was hoping to avoid that.

I have my shutter button set on movie mode to meter and to activate the movie start/start. I don't know if that maybe is effecting you. What are you mostly doing movies of?

I'm mostly making movies of wildlife, but occasionally ocean waves.
I was trying to enumerate some of my settings it movie mode to compare with yours, and in the process I discovered the setting that causes the problem.
Yesterday afternoon, I was shooting (both stills and movies) a Great horned owl that I discovered nearby last weekend. While I was waiting for the owl to do something interesting, it occurred to me that rather than recording long stretches of uninteresting footage, and continually worrying about how much storage I'm using and about the camera overheating, I could use pre-recording and just start recording when I see something interesting (which records the last few seconds before I fully-pressed the shutter button), just like I use pre-continuous shooting in stills mode. So right then, in the field, I went into the menus and set Pre-recording to on and Recording time to 5 secs.
Just now, I remembered I had made that change, so I tried turning Pre-recording off, and low and behold, the control ring now works to change AF area. This is rather disappointing, because pre-recording worked really well yesterday, so I want to continue using it. I don't understand why turning pre-recording on has this side effect.

That sounds like a classic software lock—Canon often nerfs the control ring in movie mode to prevent accidental audio noise. It's frustrating when your hardware doesn't respond as reliably as a well-oiled https://cs2.ad/rifles/ak-47 during a high-stakes match.

That is a possibility, but it seems unlikely to me because if the control ring is assigned to other functions (e.g. Set ISO speed), it works as expected. I might understand if it didn't work while recording a movie, but it doesn't work when I switch to movie mode, even when I'm not recording, when audio noise is irrelevant.
