Sloppier with small cameras?

p.1 #1 · Sloppier with small cameras?

Am I the only one who almost without thinking about it, gets sloppier in my shooting habits and especially composition when my camera is smaller?

I just spent a few days with only my D-Lux 8 and a Ricoh GRIII, both of which I love because they're small. But then I use the Ricoh and I can't be bothered to put on my glasses to see the LCD sharp and I make out the composition and hope the camera will do the rest.

And the Leica, I use more like another nice compact camera, but I don't really ponder composition when using it.

It seems that the larger my camera is, the more deliberate my shooting becomes.

But I don't like larger cameras for carrying around. My own personal conundrum.

Anyone else with this issue?

Is the solution switching to 8x10?

I prefer FF/FX. A tripod is a wonderful aid to precise composition if you can use it.

Anything less than 20x24 isn't real photography.

"Anything less than 20x24 isn't real photography"

I agree, but not necessarily to that extreme.

Did you make it yourself?

I'm not that ambitious. I rely on the limited capabilities of 17x crop format.

I agree my composition might not be as great, but not because I'm intentionally more sloppy. My old eyes don't focus on the LCD well (and I don't tend to carry reading glasses when out and about), so I do the best I can without a viewfinder. At times, I definitely wish the LCD were brighter, which might help.

Unless your astigamatisms are really bad, at least you can dial in a lot of diopers in the viewfinder without using glasses.

@DougVaughn,
You should check your camera menu's for a screen brightness adjustment. Maybe it just isn't set high enough.

JJC recently came out with several versions of easily attached hoods that fit around the camera display screens or attach to the frame area via Velcro. Maybe one of them will fit your camera. I have two Canon 77D and one 90D cameras and the version that I ordered fits the screens on both models of camera display screens. A Velcro flap wraps around the back side of the screen to hold it in place, but there are other versions and designs too. Maybe they make something that will fit your camera.

The link below brings up the Amazon page of them, so it's a good starting point.

Rear LCD screens on my cameras are all turned off. It's easier doing everything through the EVF including menu functions.

I think that you can work as quickly and intuitively or as thoughtfully and carefully as you want with both large and small cameras.

I’ve been known to to grab quick handheld shots with my larger “landscape” system… and to spend 10 minutes getting an iPhone shot just right.

If the smaller cameras have an advantage it is that they _can_ be used more spontaneously and in situations where setting up that view camera would be entirely impractical. But that does not mean that they _must_ be used that way.

I can definitely relate to this
I find if I take a FF out I’m conscious I have to live up to its capabilities which then puts a lot of pressure on taking pictures whereas if I take crop I know deep down it’s inferior to what FF could deliver so I basically just snap.
However if I use my phone I am very deliberate in ensuring it’s focused correctly and I almost always frame the shots with care also use the exp/comp option … yet it’s just a phone!! Bizzare

I don't understand that logic. It's usually easier with a better camera. Who is creating the pressure? An art director, some crowds gathering around you?
I never use an Iphone.

Pressure as in justifying using FF, hauling the bigger heavier lenses… if the shots are dull or boring then why bother making all the effort on the bigger sensor… might just as well shot on crop. But crop doesn’t handle higher iso like FF.
EDIT this is canon btw. Fact is shooting Pentax crop sensor is in a totally different league to canon crop sensor (which I have now come to realise are pretty poor)

I feel your pain. I gave up on my Ricoh GRIII Street Edition after a couple of years because I was never really impressed with it. In addition to not having any weather sealing whatsoever, the AF tracking was mostly miss instead of hit and the camera itself was unreliable; it froze way too many times when I needed it most. When I was able to get a decent image with it, the IQ wasn't as good as older APS-C cameras (like my Canon 7dmk2). I even had the (expensive) external viewfinder which I rarely used plus a custom grip.

I found I had no choice but to compromise and use my compact FF camera for travel (Sony A7c) and my OM System OM-5 for when the weather is rough. Neither is as compact as the GRIII I had, but the images I get are far superior.

Your observations on the GRIII's limitations are well taken. However, data from photons to photos show that at base ISO (ISO 100), the Ricoh GR III has about 10.4 stops of photographic dynamic range, while the Canon 7D Mark II has about 9.0 stops. Better glass, experience, etc. may negate this effect.

I can be sloppy with any size camera, but (when given the time) I tend to be more careful with small cameras, not less careful. Not counting when a tripod is being used, in which case being careful is the whole point, regardless of camera size.

Like you, I tend to be more careful with smaller cameras. My smaller cameras don’t have the megapixels for heavy cropping so it’s best to get it close in-camera. My full frame cams have a little more leeway. I wouldn’t say I get sloppy with the larger cameras but I am conscious of the limitations of smaller cameras when I use them and work accordingly.

I dont but my idea of a small camera is a Rebel + 18-55. You might try that, very nice and light to shoot landscapes
