p.1 #1 · Fuji X-T5 vs. X-H2

In the last six months I sold my Sony APS-C camera and bought back into Fujifilm’s excellent APS-C cameras. To make it clear I still shoot Sony full frame cameras for wildlife, and other stills but used to shoot Fuji and owned the XPro1, X-E1, X-E2, X-E3, X-T1, X-T2, and X-E3. These were my mirrorless cameras before Sony took off.

I was originally motivated to go back when I heard about the X-E5 but wanted to learn more about the 40 Mpixel sensor before diving in. I went with finding either a mint used X-T5 or X-H2. Unfortunate for me and my GAS I found both at great prices here on FM so I bought both to try out. It been a few months now and I’m trying to decide which to keep. I’m old enough to appreciate the controls on the X-T5 but also appreciate the form, feel, and rugged build of the X-H2. Having also shot with Canon the PASM approach of the X-H2 feels fine.

Should make it clear I’m really a still only shooter so while video may be better on the X-H2 it really a don’t care for me except how it help resale value.

So which should I keep. Like the X-H2’s EVF, grip, and memory card updates but of course the X-T5’s control layout is great and is rear display is more adaptable for still shooting. Lots of other pros and cons for each model but just can’t decide.
I need users here to help me out and give me reasons to favor one over the other. Admit every time I look through the X-H2’s EVF, at my older age I like it.

Help a gear head decide which one I should keep. Thank you.

p.1 #2 · Fuji X-T5 vs. X-H2

I currently shoot the X-T5 and a X-H2s for sports/action. I am on the fense in keeping the X-T5, love the size compared to the X-H2s but I agree with you when you look thru the view finder of the X-H2s it blows the X-T5 away.

I am going back in forth thinking one week trade the X-T5 in for a X-H2 then the other week keeping the X-T5. My feeling I would be better off with the X-H2 since it has the same button layout and better view finder.

You can get an external grip for the X-T5 so based on your use case the only remaining advantage of the X-H2 is the better EVF. I wouldn't mind a better one but it hasn't really been an issue for me.

No one can answer that for you in the abstract. They are both great cameras with slightly different features, some of which appeal more to one or another type of shooter.

Maybe just ask yourself which you used most and which you would most miss.

For a stools shooter who does not rely on deep buffer burst mode shooting the advantages of the XH largely disappear unless you are a big fan of the PASM interface.

Having shot Canon DSLR since 2008 and Sony since 2013 I’m very comfortable with PASM based cameras but the X-T5 controls take me back even further to my film based SLRs. It’s the aperture ring capability available on both Fuji bodies that’s more important to me. Didn’t mention size so much but bought back into Fuji APS-C for its small size so maybe I lean on that since I do still use full size full frame cameras but did also get a X-E5 and it pairs better with the X-T5’s memory card even its batteries are not compatible.

Already have an external grip for the X-T5 and always keep in on the X-T5 so for me that’s a given.

No one but you can or should answer this question. You know your preferences and tolerances better than anyone. They're the same camera with different form factors.

If you shoot manual lenses and don't mind the extra weight, then keep the XH2 for its superior EVF. If you'd rather have a lighter kit and a better back screen, go with the X-T5.

I had a similar dilemma with an X-T5 and X-E5 and decided to just keep both for situations where it's advantageous to have two camera bodies. So, this could be another option for you to consider.

p.1 #9 · Fuji X-T5 vs. X-H2

It really comes down to the usability of each. The X-T5 with more dedicated dials for everything, where the X-H2 is a PASM setup, and custom options are on the dial, not in Q menu.. If you gripped the X-T5, then that is a wash too. Some think the X-H2 dual card setup is better, some don't like that the cards are different types (and speeds).

My X-T5 has a better joystick placement, and it is way better feeling when using. Maybe my X-H2 joystick has an issue, and doesn't move sometimes until you really get after it, but it is up higher on the back, so to me the X-T5 one is better.

But really, the dials and layout are the difference. The X-T5 will be way different than your Sony, and the X-H2 will be more similar.

p.1 #10 · Fuji X-T5 vs. X-H2

I shoot the X-T5 for general use and an X-H2s for birds, also a GFX100s, so I'm familiar with the handling. For birds I just turn the LCD screen to face the camera when I'm shooting, so the flippy screen doesn't bother me. But for work on a tripod it drives me insane, so if I had to choose between the X-H2 and the X-T5 for general stills I'd go with the X-T5. I don't really care about the user interface differences, I can use either style.

(Well, actually, if I could only have one I'd use the GFX body. Great grip, 3-way tilt screen, decent files.

p.1 #11 · Fuji X-T5 vs. X-H2

I think that, in the end, there are probably three aspects that can affect preference. (One of them is NOT the quality of the photographs.)

1. Whether or not the specific features that are added to the XH are meaningful to the photographer (and, of course, HOW meaningful they are relative to other aspects). Do you need a deeper buffer for burst mode shooting? Are you trying to push video a bit further? If so, XH. If not, there’s little to lose with the XT.

2. Do you have a strong preference for either PASM or the old-school controls? Neither is objectively better than the other, but photographers have sometimes-strong preferences one way or the other.

3. How do you feel about camera size — either for purely subjective reason or perhaps for objective reasons such as travel/street photography? Again, neither smaller nor larger is better or worse — it is more a matter of preference.

If they brought back the XH1 dial layout I'd seriously consider an H3. The H2 is just too similar to what you get from Canikon and Sony. At the time the H2 and H2s were released they offered a valid solution ... but in 2026...I'd just get a Sony/Canon/Nikon if I was going with that form factor.

I like that the T series looks good. Having a bad ass looking camera reminds me I'm a vain idiot but also doesn't prevent me from dragging my camera along when I'm out with the family. When I used to bring the 5D3 and the 24-70...I looked a bit weird ... but it was ok because I had very young kids. Dragging it along with a 16 and 13 year old...they'd give me hell. But the XT-3 with a 27mm or 35mm ... it's not much bigger than a phone.

I have the X-T5 and the X-H2s and I have them for the different sensors. Personally I prefer the X-T5 interface but it is not as though I don't like the X-H2s interface. I see pluses and minuses to both. The X-H2 has a bit more capability but not much and the X-T5 is a bit smaller but I don't find the size difference very important either and especially so for you given that you have and X-E5 when you want to go smaller. I would just pick whichever interface you like better.

Been there, did that and kept the XH2. Fits my hand better, faster framerate, more intuitively useful (read modern) control layout with actual PSAM settings and controls that allow you to switch modes quickly and intuitively. No it isn’t retro looking so there is that, but it works the way a modern camera should.

Steve, as a fellow gearhead here is my 0.02$ worth

Short Answer: Keep them both.

Long Answer: From what you posted you seem not able to decide between these 2 bodies as each has features that appeal to you. That is exactly what the camera manufacturer's want. They purposely put some special features in one body, but not all, in another body put the other features that you also want. They want you to buy multiple bodies from them.

Sony is an expert at this and I believe you have or recently had, 4 different bodies of theirs. Why does having 2 Fuji bodies mean you have to get rid of one? You don’t mention your Fuji lens set, but I have to believe you will end up with multiple primes/zooms and might that 2nd body come in useful?

I have 4 Sony bodies, 2 @ 61MP, and find a need for each. With the larger body with a better EVF I use my 4 Batis or 2 GM’s and my 100-400GM on, the other smaller A7CR body I use my 5 Sigma I series and/or Voigts on. Different needs, different body. My Olympus M43 gear which I have shot since 2012, I use one high speed fast readout camera body with a great EVF (OM-1) for for wildlife/action with longer zooms. On another smaller Retro style body (OM-3) for Travel and general purposes that has a different set of smaller prime lenses.

With my 1st Fuji setup, which I only had for 7 months, I went with the X-T5. It is truthfully the best camera I have every had, it has all the features I want for the a Travel/GP camera system that the smaller compact Sony's and my OM-3 setups lack. Don’t plan on ever getting the Fuji H series PASM style body, as I love the retro style dials and smaller size/feel of the X-T5. But will seriously look at the next version of the X Pro 4, as long as its got 40MP, the same size W-235 battery and is WR (and why I am not interested in a X-E5), to use as a backup 2nd Fuji body for my travel overseas.

I went through a similar process with the X-H2 and X-T5 and ended up with the Z8 and GFX100S II in addition to OM1.

Agree with everything you say. I’m not into retro but that has no influence on me with the X-T5. It’s simply that it’s smaller and lighter and has symmetrical type of dual card slots and I like its rear LCD design even though it can’t be folded back to protect it.

I would keep them both if I thought the would actually get used but admit I already own too many cameras so trying to cull the herd some.

I might consider the GFX100S II but the Z8 is just too big and heavy for me at my age. I did own the Z9 for a while before there was a Z8 but decided it was way too big. Canon’s R5 Mark II is the biggest camera I want to own these days.

Thank you all for your input. Haven’t decided yet but I know I won’t be shooting any video with these bodies or high speed long bursts (use my A1 for that). Admit I’m leaning toward smaller size of the X-T5 but do like the ergo’s of the X-H2.

Well then. Pick the one that does the most best for you. The best way to do this is pick one lens and take both bodies to a decent photo location. Spend a few hours walking around with one then repeat with the other. You’ll know by the end of the day. How often did you use the tilting LCD? Did memory cards really matter? Which control layout was more intuitive? Did features on either camera slow you down, confuse you or prevent you from getting a picture you wanted? Would the other camera have solved that? End of day I suspect you’ll realize you can make do with either, but one will be easier to part with.
