Steller's jays and Steller sea lions are both named after Georg Wilhelm Steller, an 18th-century German naturalist and physician. During Vitus Bering's 1741 Alaskan expedition, Steller documented numerous species that now bear his name, including the Steller's sea cow, Steller's eider, and Steller's sea eagle.
Well, Steller's or Stellars, (Steller's, as you point out is correct), will not be a question when or if, the American Ornithological Society proceeds with their plan to remove any references in bird names that contains human identities.
From a search:
"The American Ornithological Society (AOS) is renaming all bird species in the U.S. and Canada named after people (eponyms) to eliminate exclusionary, biased, and offensive historical associations, focusing instead on descriptive traits and habitats. Starting in 2024, the multi-year effort affects hundreds of birds, aiming to foster inclusivity in birding."
