p.1 #1 · Recommend body for mamiya sekor 80mm f1.9

I current am in the Nikon z system. I would like to try out the mamiya 80mm f1.9 - could you suggest a camera body ideally digital with or without inverted teleconverter to go with it?

I’m really not familiar with medium format or vintage lenses, but I’m determined to try out this lens, so need some advice.

Thank!

I mean, if you really want to use it to its fullest potential, buy a Mamiya 645 and enjoy the medium format film process.

For digital, you could of course adapt it to Fuji GFX for the widest coverage, though still not quite native size. Any full frame body would work too with a simple mechanical adapter, but it would be a short telephoto instead of rhe normal lens it was designed as.

I'd probably try to pick up a cheap mamiya to z adapter (should be available?) off ebay etc myself

This is a strange lens to buy a dedicated medium format body for IMO. Definitely not a medium format halo lens of any sort.

You could of course adapt it to full frame but you won't get the same look/rendering operating at a crop.

This is an excellent lens and I like it a lot on my gfx. Its not a lens I would buy to adapt on a ff camera let alone buy a body just to be able to use it.

I don’t know…it’s one of the fastest medium format lenses ever made it’s equivalent to roughly a 50mm f/1.2 in FF terms. And reportedly quite good. When I had a Mamiya 645 I used the 80mm f/2.8. (And use an 80/2.8 on my Mamiya C330 TLR (for my normal).

How far down the rabbit hole are you willing to go? The only way you'll ever use the full, optically unaltered lens is with an old 645 film body. That's probably the cheapest too. All the digital backs for AFD were much smaller than 60x45. Using a dumb adapter on a Fuji GFX body might be the next least worst option.

This is exactly my point...it's easy to get a lens that can generate this amount of bokeh across lots of systems without pulling on this thread.
