I have been using the 180-600 with the 1.4 TC and I find the images quite acceptable, sharp enough and no issues. Has anyone tried the 2X with this lens and how have the images been, I know you will need good light as it is probably at F11 which may limit its use, but what re your thoughts and image quality

I'd be very skeptical that it would have decent enough sharpness or would AF satisfactorily in anything but good light. Photography Life's review shows quite a hit to sharpness at the 600mm end with the 2x TC added, dropping it significantly.

https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-z-180-600mm-f-5-6-6-3-vr/2

With the 1.4x TC at 600mm, it drops sharpness by about 17% from 2343 wide open bare to 1949 wide open with 1.4x TC. When you use the 2x TC it drops sharpness by about 33% or double the drop in sharpness from 2343 wide open bare to 1579 wide open with the 2x TC. I would consider that to be unacceptable.

Thanks Lance, much appreciate the feedback, guess I'll stick with the 1.4X. I see you're from Australia, would love to get there one day. Best Regards

You should start looking at a 600/4 or perhaps the 800/6.3 if you want more reach with TCs and high IQ. At longer distances disturbances in the air will ruin images, so >1000mm is usually best for smaller subjects at closer distances.

I did some testing myself with the 2x, having bought it for a bit. However, I later returned it. I found the 1.4x was good enough that it represented a legitimate improvement at 840mm when compared to the bare lens and simply cropping to the 840mm FOV and enlarging.

The 2x, however, showed no additional detail when compared to the lens with 1.4x, cropped to the 2x frame. In real world scenarios it led to less detail due to the higher ISO required to get usable shutter speeds. So, IMO: 1.4x - worth it. 2x - not worth it.

My experience to a T. Either 1.4x or buy a longer lens.

Or wait for a 200-700 if there is a one.
I hope so.

Mine is surprisingly sharp with either tc. It surprised the he** outa me anyway. I know others have experienced otherwise, but that's mine. I've had almost every Nikon supertele short of the 800mm's...I'm confident in my observations.
