There are some interesting ideas here for a stills camera like Nick says, and there are a bevy of really basic quality of life things missing too. On the flip side of his list:
1) Power switch MUST be on the same side as the shutter button.
God I hate this on the OM. I also don't like the lens release not being near the camera, feels like I have to juggle the camera to change lenses.
How many variants of similar cameras can Nikon sustain with their market share? I'd rather they focus on the higher grade cameras, but of course they are lower volume. I would not buy any FF camera with less than the 45MP.
What's expensive to develop is new sensors and new processors. Making a slightly different user interface and button layout using the same key components as in the ZR and Z6III is probably quite inexpensive for Nikon.
The ZR is apparently selling well, motivating further variants of the concept.
I see such cameras useful for gimbal and remote camera use (think Auto Capture etc.)

The power button is AWFUL- On/off at random. Absolute worst power button I have ever used, on any camera, in my entire life. A switch that required you to remove the battery to turn on and off would be much more useable!! Seriously I have never had a camera turn on or off at complete random times than this one.
The screen needs to tilt up and down without needing to be pulled out. It makes switching between levels of shots very annoying-
Beyond that I don't really have any complaints! I video'd/photograph'd the NYC marathon, basketball games etc with it. Have really enjoyed it minus the power button/screen tilt.
I would assume Nikon would use this new stills/classic hybrid version as the stepping stone up from the Z30 line...appeal to the bloggers that got it as their first cameras and who love that style of body.
I bet they would move a lot of units. The kids couldn't care less about the lack of an EVF. Keep the awesome new hotshoe and sell the crap outta those mics too to kids that don't need RED for their make up tutorials.
If they could fix the H265 issues I’d rather have one of those than a ZR for my own uses.

My ZR doesn't randomly turn and off, the latest firmware illuminates the power button.
Before the FW update it was impossible to tell whether you'd turned it off or it had just gone into sleep mode, all fixed now.

In practically use in turns on and off- The location its placed, my fingers are constantly hitting it to turn on and off. For example low shots, or changing the grip etc.
It needs to be a tactical on off not a pressure switch.
I think it would be a smart idea. People are liking smaller cameras such as the Sony C lines. My guess is it's going to be a 24mp sensor with a mechanical shutter. But if they put a 45mp sensor with a mechanical shutter, or the Z9 / Z8 sensor in it, I would definitely be interested. The Z9 / Z8 sensor would also give Nikon an 8K version of the ZR, giving them basically 2 cameras in one. I wonder if Nikon would make a detachable EVF as they did with some of the Nikon 1 cameras. The ZR did add a digital hot shoe. It would pretty much be the best of both worlds. Smaller size when the EVF is not needed, and a nice size EVF when needed. Maybe they could even add an option to make it tilt like the EVF on the GFX 50S had, which could also be very convenient for video.
The new ZR hotshoe does have me thinking about things like the GFX 100 II removable EVF, and if Nikon will ever go down that road now that they have a more capable platform. I'd love to see more options, especially for cameras in the ZR type form factor.
22–25 mm thickness? That’s incredibly thin for a full-frame camera and thinner than almost any other camera out there, even the Ricoh GR. I’m a bit skeptical, but if Nikon really pull this off, I’d seriously consider pairing it with the 26mm pancake lens for everyday carry.
If Nikon fixes a lot of the odd issues the ZR has, I can see myself buying one. Many of these can be done through firmware updates.
However, a more photo-friendly version with some tweaks could be great as well.

Why wouldn't it be ? MF on the ZR with focus peaking etc. is th esame experience performance wise as the ZF and the screen is sublime.
Has anyone tried framing telephoto shots with the ZR screen (regardless of focusing)? What's the experience like?
My experience from a PEN E-P3 told me a viewfinder is required for most shooting from 70mm to 200mm (equivalent). But I'm willing to reconsider if Nikon is offering a better jam.

Not sure why you'd reach for a ZR first for telephoto stills photography for many reasons.
lord help my wallet if this is some kind of coolpix update.
agree with whoever said above it could be an interesting ricoh GR-ish full frame body, paired with the 26 or 28 it would be pretty small still, but man most Nikon lenses are massive

Not needing a viewfinder would generally open more options, especially when looking for less weight. I don't think I would try telephoto with a Z30. Just wondering about ZR.
Thom Hogan has hinted at a stripped down Zr as the Z30 Fx variant. I’d expect a basic camera similar to Z30, probably without the huge LCD etc. I still might be interested but I don’t see it being what a lot seem to hope for (Small Stills Powerhouse) but an Entry Level Full Frame (that’ll still pair cool with the 26mm.)

I don't know what plans Nikon might have for a potential stills oriented ZR, but Nikon certainly knows how to produce an optional EVF. My Nikon 1 V3 released in 2014 (still used today) has one.
