New Leica Survey

p.3 #1 · New Leica Survey

I took the survey as well. Starting with the typo in the email subject line, it was a bit helter-skelter and hard to actually discern their intent. I also thought they might be dancing around the subject of IBIS when they mentioned a smaller battery. I definitely prefer the M11 no-baseplate design and answered with that in mind.

I didn’t get the survey. Probably because last time in the comments section I said they need to fix the service turnaround issues that haven’t improved since I got into Leica in 2010.

The real reason is probably because I’m not an M11 owner.

As for the baseplate question: I think it would be a mistake to go back to it. If I had a choice I would not want it on my M240. I replaced the stock plate with the RRS plate with Arca grooves. It properly weather seals the base, but I don’t like having to unscrew it to access the battery and memory card. I agree with earlier comments to include USB-C charging on the battery itself. The EU should make it mandatory to force Leica and other brands. I have this in my Chinese brand speedlite batteries…

In theory the M12 would use a newer more efficient processor and new more efficient sensor, which should extend battery life at the current battery capacity level, or match current performance with a lower capacity battery. In theory. But add IBIS…

Personally I’d just like to see elimination of the mechanical shutter. But that would require a fast sensor. Maybe wishful thinking.

I think you received the survey if you registered a product with Leica and clicked a box about receiving emails from them. My only Leica is an M8 that I purchased a few months ago. I've had other Leicas in the past... CL, SL, SL2, SL2s, M9, M240, M10. I've registered and "unregistered" them as they come and go... my guess is that if you haven't logged into their website with your login for some time, you are no longer on their mailing list.

I never bought anything Leica-related new . Therefore no registration and no emails. In Leica commercial terms, I don't exist for them as user.
The only Leica based surveys I sometimes participate in are the ones in the Leica online forum. Participated in the survey if an EVF-M camera is something desirable which I answered with a clear "yes".

I also received the Leica survey. One portion of the questionnaire asked if you would be willing to accept a smaller battery - and how much % less capacity would you find acceptable.

I interpreted this as a question for the M12: if Leica put an IBIS system in the M12, would you still be interested if it required a smaller battery? IBIS was not mentioned in the survey. I suspect IBIS system designs have continued to progress with smaller mechanisims that might fit in an M size body. If something has be decreased in size to permit this, it

Hmmm, IBIS ... AND ... a smaller battery ... and a high MP sensor with maximum bands readout. We'd be changing batteries about the same as changing a roll of film, getting 36 shots per battery. The M12 EVF version (or a faster readout sensor) would likely be even closer to a roll of 24 per battery.

Now, that's nostalgia.

Might as well back the buddha lugs, get rid of the frame selector and add a little framework around the windows while they're at it!

It's possible. I still receive their marketing emails including most recently the 35 Noctilux. I also receive the previous survey (as mentioned) that was last discussed here. But I also haven't logged in to my account for ages.

What would a "more analog experience" be?

Apparently it's the possiblity of returning to fiddling with a base plate to swap ones, zeros, and lithium ions.

I'm not saying it better, right, or ideal. It was literally just a guess based on what was asked in the survey.

FWIW, my first digital M was an M11-M entirely because of USB-C on the bottom and the improved sensor. I have film bodies with baseplates if I want analog. The M12-M would have to have something compelling besides a return to brass to convince me to upgrade.
