The other lens is a consumer 75-300 zoom that I'm not expecting much from (haven't mounted it yet). And yeah, it takes CF cards. Came with a 1GB card containing someone's vacation pics.
Those tend to be really good up to 200mm, had a Tamron 75-300 I bought in 2005, really good to there imo. Past 200mm depends. Migt be able to spare a card or 2

Good luck, have fun, are you able to use ps , or do you use a different raw processor, or just shoot jpegs?
It would be so helpful if people would specify RAW or JPEG when posting image samples. I love what I'm seeing, but if shooting RAW is required for great results, I'm not interested.

I shot jpeg early on I'm more the other direction though. I feel like I need to shoot raw for max resolution to make up for the lower mp on older bodies
Also the raw file size is pretty small on the older bodies so I dont really have to use jpeg

Well, I've always been a RAW shooter with very limited post processing skills. I used to only set to jpgs when shooting teams for sports events just for ease with all the files. No one ever complained. But it's been too many years ago for me to make any helpful statement on jpgs from the 7D. I'm sure you could tweak the settings to your liking just like pretty much any DSLR.
24mm f/2.8, 35mm f/2.0, 50mm f/1.7, 85mm f/1.4, 100mm f/2.8 macro, 300mm f/4.0, 1.4x Teleconverter II APO, Tokina 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5, Tokina AT-X 80-200mm f/2.8 and Sigma 400mm f/5.6 APO
Looking at my old images recently I seemed to have pretty much stopped using the Sigma 400 when I got the 300/4.0 as I was pairing it with the 1.4x teleconverter for most of my wildlife work. I was amazed at how well this setup was working when I "found" the old files again. The 85mm was another true gem.
The ones I've posted so far are a mix of raw and jpg. Overall I'm not the biggest fan of SOOC jpg output on this camera, which isn't surprising given its age, but it can hit with the right lighting and exposure.
I'd be curious how the high iso is. I haven't found the 20D to be much different at 1600 vs 24mp aps, because to a large degree 1) either gets NR at 1600 and 2) either cleans up. So I'm sure later is better , but it doesn't really matter as much as you might think. Ccd is supposedly not good at high iso but you can read a lot of things on the internet
