Just acquired a unused copy of this camera but was trying to catch up on where users on this forum think this camera sits in the overall scheme of all things Sony. I am still using Nikon mirrorless but am moving into a hybrid setup.

It’s a fantastic landscape camera, one of the finest full frame sensors ever made for the job. Portraits too. The AF isn’t anywhere near modern standards but it’s fine as a travel cam.

Because I’m a crazy person, I’ve been considering buying one as well (crazy because I have no real need for it). It has the same amazing sensor as my RX1RII and I want that sensor with interchangeable lenses. The A7RII has the same sensor (and is cheaper), but it doesn’t have the nice refinements of the III.

Like Scott said, for my understanding it is still one of the best sensors out there, and that’s amazing for such a relatively old camera.

Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for it?

Only real complaint I had with the A7r III was the ergonomics, which won't apply to most people. Image quality remains great, uses the bigger battery, and the AF isn't terrible for its age. I've owned a couple over the years and was always satisfied with the images.

It's the quiet achiever. It appeared just eight months before the sleepy duopoly finally woke up and produced their first MILC FF cameras. Sony was determined to stay ahead of the curve, even with no competition. They are not perfect but DLSRs were horrible for travel work.

Absent Sony, in what time frame would C/N ever have made a full frame mirrorless camera? They had people buying these small toys at the time, even five years after Sony revitalised the market. They might never have done it.

Why is this in the Nikon section? I had this camera, it's fine. Has better AF than the Z7II for example, but depending on what you're doing it might not even matter.

You might try asking this in the Sony forum.

You probably intended to post this on the Sony forum, but I support what others have said above. It is a very nice camera if AF is not your top priority. In that regard it is akin to Nikon's Z7 with ergonomics, colour output and mount size being the differentiators (and largely a matter of personal preference).

In terms of output IQ, yeah, the Z7 and A7R3 are very close.

However, there are a few things I really preferred about the A7R3 body:

- Playback button on the right hand side
- Rotating rear dial
- Locking media door
- Battery life

I always felt like the Sony was the more "pro" and robust of the two.

Having shot BIF with both (which each system's 100-400), the Z7ii has the edge. I always felt like the human face detect on the Sony was more reliable, though.

The RIII sensor was my favorite Sony sensor. Then they went to 61mp and I was kind of "done" at that point. No way I was going to buy an A1.

Thx for reply, very helpful. I bought it because I have acquired 3 E mount lenses now and wanted a slight edge on the eye detect. I find that in low light, there may still be challenges but I would never give up the ergos of a Nikon. I will be using this along side a Z7II. Maybe its a draw on AF?

You are correct. Meant Sony forum but glad I got the Nikon super users to weigh in as well. I probably will post over there to see what responses I get.

To all, I meant to post this in Sony forum. Force of habit I suppose. Thx for all the replies anyway. I paid 1200 for a unused open box.....no box though.......

Yeah I would say auto focus is basically a push between the two. I much prefer the color coming off the Nikon version of the sensor, though with post processing you can basically make them look the same.

The built-in Nikon picture controls are far more pleasing than the pretty bad Sony profiles from back then.

One tiny detail about the Sony that drove me insane is that the R3 never got a colored autofocus box, and finding the thin gray box is an exercise in insanity in some shooting conditions. The Z7 box may be ridiculously thin but at least it’s red!

For some reason my quote box is not working but your comments about color is sort of what I see in Flickr. My reason is I want a native camera to go with my Sony 50, 135 G and Samyang 35 1.4 Series II, a real sleeper of a lens. Close to the Tamron. But does some weird things with the Techart. On the other hand it passed my tests for low light AF for small area but I had to use fine tune when I added a Nikon flash (Godox).

I just cannot go back to 24 Mp sensors and the Z8 contains a bunch of Tech I do not need. Low light, hi resolution and heavy cropping is a thing with me. I use exclusively raw with DXO pure raw. The great equalizer for sensor noise.

The A7r3 is still a fine camera. It lacks the menu and color science refinements that the mk4 and mk5 models received, but it's still a decent camera. I think you overpaid a bit though, as used A7R3s are more in the 900-1000 range.

Yes, 0 actuations. New. But yes, it was a bit of a stretch. B and H, Adorama, MPB would all have this camera at least 1400. For 900-1000 on Fleabay you would have visible wear and at least 20k. It was a fair deal. 1200 was my limit. I sold off my Zf, just can't warm up to 24 Mp after shooting 45 Mp. My eyes can see the differences, particular in lower light. I still have my Z7II. Truth is, if a Z7III shows up I will sell both at that time.
