Looks like that was a conservative estimate.
Based on some daytime photos in my back yard, that thing is scary sharp wide open, definitely better than the Sigma. Can't wait to put it to some use in Saudi.

Is this attack on Iran going to affect your trip?
It very much looks so. Flying through Dubai is currently impossible (I'm booked on Emirates), and even if I get to Jeddah, the real trip is to a different adjacent place to where I'd only travel with my Swiss passport on the best of days, so ... I seriously have my doubts.
For now the kid is having a track day.

Unfortunately all of KSA along with the entire Gulf states and Jordan have closed their airspace.

In the first image, it looks like vignetting correction overcompensated. Harder to tell in the second. Are you using Lightroom and it is using Canon's correction information, or Adobe's.
It would be interesting to compare field of view from a SOOC jpeg (or jpeg embedded in RAW) against an Adobe processed image to see if the distortion correction is the same. If you recall, with the 24-105 Z at 24mm, I found that Adobe's correction method was different than Canon's and resulted in a slightly wider field of view.

I am using Adobe's correction profile because on average I like them far better than the also available Canon profile. This is something I exported on the quick in the motel without any real adjustments, that can wait until I'm home
I'll do more comparisons later. I'm both grouchy and mostly offline at the race track...

"better than the sigma in every regard" is the way I would phrase it, based on my daytime comparison test. Is there distortion? I'm sure there is, I didn't measure it nor do I have the tools or patience to do so. For me, the question is if the lens will meet my needs, one of them being superior to the Sigma. The answer is yes, it's "better" optically, it's smaller, it's lighter. Is it perfect? I'm sure not, physics is a bitch. Will people measure distortion? No doubt. Will I be one of them? No

For the longest time I thought that my 20mm VCM was about the widest I'd need for *my* shooting style.
And then I recently went to the Greystone Mansion in L.A. (reserved ticket to get indoors) and I wish I had a 14mm lens.
Not sure how much I'll start getting into indoor mansion photography (living in L.A. I guess there's no shortage of them) but if it is something I decide to start doing in earnest, I'll be looking to pick this up.
And yes I realize there are cheaper RF primes out there, but I'm a hybrid photographer/videographer so if I'm going to pick up an ultra-wide angle lens, I'll want the VCM so I can quickly toggle between stills and video and have that fast, silent AF motor.
