No idea Bob as to how it got its name - I have only lived in this area for some 6 years so very much still a 'newcomer' but nobody I have asked has had any real idea at all - but the name is appropriate, it is just a small unpaved lane with only a couple of old farm houses/cottages in its' couple of mile length.
I thought it was from W.NY - as I cycled past a road named the same when I lived on the south side of the lake from where I think your image was taken.
