That’s not how refurbishment works. I’m going to take an educated guess and say that US refurbs are refurbished in New Jersey, making tariffs moot. The fact that the Z5ii is $1,199 proves it. It just happened to get the deep discount this time.

It does bring up an interesting thought. Say a camera is imported from Japan, tariffs are paid (by the importer, Nikon USA), the camera is sold, and then returned due to a minor issue. Let's assume refurbishment doesn't occur in New Jersey. If the camera is then sent back to Japan for refurbishment, and shipped back to Nikon USA to be sold again, does Nikon USA pay tariffs for import again? I'm sure Nikon tracks every product they import and the tariffs paid, but I'm wondering if CBP waives tariffs the second time around for goods that are "imported" twice.
lol just wait till you experience that old ass processor in action, and that teeeeeny, thin little AF box.

Ha, I was already asking myself why that damn thing wouldn't show me AF lock in AFC mode. I'll just trust it, but its job is not action just backcountry and small body when I want more than OM
What these refurb items are really?
WHen Nikon sales refurb lens for example - are these well used items and refurbed to max level? or are these more like lightly used or unused/returned items?
I never bought one before and just ordered one lens last night.
What can I expect?

Canon's refurbs are always indistinguishable from new (sometimes they are literally new overstock). Nikon appears to be a little less selective in terms of what they'll sell as refurbished, but in general most items would be either a 9, 9+ or 10 when evaluated using this site's rating system. I've seen reports of bodies with 7 shutter actuations and reports of bodies with 3,000+. Nearly all refurbished items are simply returns (and not defects), and I prefer to buy refurbished where possible because it means my item has had an additional thorough once over from a tech.
Only thing I think you can really knock Nikon refurbs on is the packaging. Sometimes you get little more than one thin sheet of bubble wrap in a big white box. Canon and Fuji both are leagues better in this regard.
Once I got one of the big prime lenses with a crackwd hood they claimed that the lens was carefully checked but they missed the hood. But I returned it anyway… and the focusing has a noise louder than it should be…..

Really? Can they sell old ruined items too?
Would price reflect the quality? Like near price of new would mean its like new condition?
You get an adequate return policy and I have never been hassled for sending back a decentered or otherwise “bad” refurb. Do your due diligence and things will go your way.

It’s back with some good deals. Old 24-70 for $629 seems like a steal.
Nikon USA made a mistake in the listing, they advertised it in email as the 24-70/2.8 V1 but when you click the link it takes you to the 24-70 f/4 page for $629.

I use the older Z7 for high rez in combination with a Z5II for moving subjects. The bodies are about the same size. The Z5II has a few video features over the Zf. Gives a peace of mind in case one body fails in the middle of nowhere.
Well that’s a kick in the junk… I thought they were just clearing them out.

Yeah, my jaw dropped when I saw the email price and I immediately went to order! Of the midrange Z zooms I’ve owned (24-70/4, 24-120/4, 24-200, 24-70/2.8) the v1 f/2.8 was my favorite. I’m intrigued by v2 but not prepared to spend that much right now.
