The major attraction of the San Marcos de Colon parade is the afternoon Desfile Hipico, or horse parade. The horses arrive in a number of ways: in the back of large trucks, in pickups, or in luxurious large trailers. These images are from behind the scenes, before the parade starts. The horses are warmed up, prettied up, and fed for the event. This year, there were more horses than ever before, over 700, I was told. I'll post images of the actual parade later on.

Most people have no idea how much attention horses require, and even considerably more when prepping them for special events like this. I love horses, but not the time required to take care of them. My involvement with horses ended when I was about 20, now 83. I still love horses though.

Thanks for the comments, Charles and CharleyL. This is a cattle- and agriculture-based area, and horses are part of the culture. There are working horses and show horses. The show horses are impressive animals and can be quite expensive. The parade has a mix, with respect to both horses and people. I will post some portraits, and you will see that there are people participating from all economic/social classes.
