Using my A7RV. Capture one isn't stable enough, sony doesn't even have their own app that works, Evoto seemed promising but won't let you adjust the output (jpeg vs raw) without a tether cable.
I'm going to have to tether with a cable for my media day shoots I guess, but why is it so bad? I want to wirelessly shoot to my iPad. And be able to charge my iPad at the same time. If I tether to the iPad I can't charge it.
Anyone use something that works flawlessly? I can't show up to paid professional shoots with troubleshooting issues and glitches.
edit: For added clarity, I need to simply view the captured images I have taken during a photo shoot, on my ipad or a laptop. I don't need to edit the pics or control the camera. It's just a method for letting others view the images I have captured on the spot for their review.

Thank you, that is super helpful! I'll snag something to see how reliable that is. I know most high volume shooters are rocking a cable, probably for the same reasons I'm dealing with.

What do you mean? More than 80% of my shooting is tethered and Sony's native Remote app is fantastic, on both MacOS and Windows, via USB, Ethernet and WiFi.
Why not wirelessly shoot to your microwave or a toaster? Besides, if you're having so many issues with your iPad, you should be in an Apple forum asking these questions. Sony has nothing to do with it. Their tethering is the best out of the big 3. Canon is second, and Nikon's the worst but the differences aren't that big, they're all serviceable.
It's a super common complaint that I see, wireless tethering sucks for how I need it, I'm not sure why you're sassy and defending it?
I'm thinking we're not using tethering the same. I can control the camera wireless, tho it's a royal pain in the ass to setup up, and the Sony app sucks. It's laggy, slow, just bad bad bad. But I need wireless tether to VIEW the images on a screen to show parents and players for my media days the images I'm capturing for them. I don't need to edit them, and only need a jpeg for them to look at. The sony creative app only controls the camera for me and is slow as shit. Sony Imaging Edge Mobile simply doesn't work for me. I'll try it on a laptop and see how it goes for their desktop version.

Do you only need the files to be transferred remotely and not control the camera remotely as well? If so, have you tried FTP?
Yeah no need to control the camera. I've peaked into the FTP world, if that's what I have to do and it's reliable I'll go that route. Just seems like a headache and too many hoops to jump through for simply wanting to view the images my camera is capturing on another screen.

Yep, the initial FTP setup is a pain (esp on the "server" side, ie the FTP server you'll run on your computer). But once it's set up it's rock-solid and shouldn't give you any trouble. It's an older protocol but simple, universal, and quite reliable on all the camera systems I've used it with, including Sony.
Btw I have a bit of experience developing wireless image transferring software for cameras. I wrote "airnef" many years ago:

It's hilarious that Leica and Hasselblad cracked this way before the big 3.
After dealing with Sony's super-crappy interface software for so many years, I was almost shocked at how good the Leica software was when I acquired a Leica Q3. The disparity in performance between these two systems is beyond belief IMHO, in this day & age.

The fact that I can move a 16bit, 200mb X2D file to my phone in seconds when a 20mb jpeg takes longer from my Nikon is WILD. Makes you wonder what these companies are doing.

Wireless monitor system might work best via HDMI out TX cam side, and just plug in RX to any display device. Simply mirrors your cam, pretty easy and reliable as long as no interference.

Tethering with most manufacturers is FAR more effort to get working properly than it should be. Wls only makes the issue worse.
Those concerned obviously don’t view it as a priority otherwise they’d devote more than an afterthought to it - whereas folks like (digital) Hasselblad or Phase have grown up w/tethered work and see it as a key checklist item.
Just look at the lack of ‘graceful’ OEM tether cable locks or even the location of USB-C slots with some cameras.
Ok, bitching over, I’ve been running the following ‘hubs’ on two iPads tethering Sony A1s with Area 51 and NineVolt cables with zero issues - usually charging with V-mount batteries. It allows charging while tethered, HDMI in or out, etc. Nice and small and light.
I don’t even attempt going wireless - you can get it working ‘ok’ 10’/10 times at home in testing and 15 minutes on location it goes belly-up. Not worth the hassle or wasted time on location.
Edit: Note the base usb-c port on this hub (the one that is protected by the metal ‘wings/NATO rail) that goes to the laptop/ipad (I also use them with a MBP) won’t accept all 90deg cables - on some the plastic housing are too thick. I use the Kondor Blue ‘patch’ cables for everything but the tethering. Zero issues and fast. I recommend watching the video on the hub.

I've been whining about this for years in this forum - just give me an easy way to get a photo to my phone! Last year I was on a photo walk and watched someone do this with his Leica Q - I was stunned. Again, how has Leica understood this and been able to dedicate the resources but Sony, Canon and Nikon haven't? Fuji isn't great either.
One day...

I'm legit considering switching systems if it's that good lol.
Edit: Then I looked at the price and remember why I'm running a Sony or Canon setup lmao holy cow.

It goes without saying that most brands allow you to just USB-C from the camera to the phone and move files very fast. It's really the wireless that sucks, and that most cameras are using/defaulting to the ancient 2.4 GHz bands.

Strange. My colleague kept complaining about the connection between his Q3 and iPhone failing, and recently told me, quite enthusiastically, that it finally seems to be working reliably after the latest update. On the plus side, his focus peaking now also lights up in AF mode unless he manually turns it off every time he switches modes. Brilliant software. 😄

Leica couldn't find their way out of a fenceless field without making the field worse somehow.
