p.1 #1 · The "Potomac Sycamore"

Over 125 ft tall and over 200 years old. The name comes from this species of sycamores that line the Potomac River from Washington, DC to West Virginia.

Wonder why the majority of the branches are on one side.

I forgot to tell viewers that that gap was due to the limbs being trimmed back prior to the power and phone cables being buried.

My other posts of this tree I state that.... here my mind froze!

The sycamore was not able to escape "progress" despite being named a "historical tree". The "olde national road" runs on the right.
There are 2 "old National Road" markers from the early 1800's on either side of the sycamore.

The Potomac Sycamore sits on a Christmas Tree farm property now. You can see some on the left.

I always like the "Pinto or Paint bark and the extra large maple-like leaves of the Sycamores, Dan'l! On top of that, I love the composition on this one!

I do also Douglas! In the Winter the lighter shades of green are bland. Spring they are more "greenish" and the bark darker that adds nice separation to the molting of the "skin".

I will be going back to shoot from a different angle. I don't like that vacant portion of the tree that was removed to allow the power lines to trash the view. The tree is a monster in height!

Accessing the tree is a real adventure. It is all down a steep hill and no safe parking above the tree. The Christmas tree farm in the frame has a "deer fence" (10ft high)and blocks my access to the tree. The walk would be safer but longer.
Thanks!
Dan'l

Thank you Marcelo! Yeah "historic" and progress doesn't keep the County from hacking away limbs that stretch over the road and block the ugly power lines.

The sky is what drew me to shoot the tree this day.
