Excellent shots! I looked through some of your other posts with the Yellowstone wolves and tigers of India. Are you primarily using the R1? Or a mix of the R1 and R5ii?

Hi Greg, I do primarily use the R1. It is the best canon camera I’ve ever used and my favorite canon camera that I’ve ever used.

Trips and gear:

Uganda - 2 - R52’s, 100-300 2.8, 24-105 4.0, 1.4x, 2x

Churchill - 2 - R52’s, 100-300 2.8, 24-105, 600 4.0, 1.4x, 1.4x, 2x - kinda wished I had brought an R1

MN Owls - R1/R52, mostly used the R1. 100-500, 600 4.0, 24-105

India - took the R1, R52, 100-300 2.8, 24-105 2.8, 600 f/4, 1.4x, 1.4x, 2x. Mostly used the R1,

Yellowstone all of this year was mostly R1‘s, 600 f4, 100-300 2.8

Katmai Coast 2 trips - 2 - R1’s, 100-300 2.8, 400 2.8, 1.4x, 1.4x, 2x

2026 Plans:

MN Owls - 3 trips back to back to back, will do a R1/R52 combo, and will try to use both equally, want to push both to their limits and MN is the perfect spot.

India, 3 trips back to back to back, Debating on what to take, 2 - R1’s, or R1/R52 combo. I just absolutely love the R1, but i also like having the diversity of different cameras that can have different strengths. But really the only strength the R52 has over the R1 is resolution, and I am honestly not sure if it’s that big of a gap. Small birds at further distances can be an Issue. Right now I am leaning towards R1/R52 combo, 70-200 2.8 Z, 400 2.8, 24-105 2.8, 1.4x, 1.4x, 2x. But I may end up taking two R1’s.

Tanzania, Uganda, Patagonia and Churchill - Same thoughts as India.

I love the 100-300 2.8, its prob canon’s most versatile lens - i am working on an article about it, but i am tired of carrying it and either the 400 2.8 or 600 4.0 in airports across the world, plus the 70-200 2.8 Z is so good, even with a teleconverter.

Also numerous weddings, events, portraits, sports, etc - R1 is my main camera. At some point, I want to write an indepth article about the R1 vs the R52.

More info than you probably wanted, but overview of the stats.

Great photography! Yes if I was able to visit Yellowstone on a frequent basis I would love it also!
Again superb compositions!

Awesome series!
Heard from a ranger that these guys are mini killing machines—eating 1/3 of their body weight every day just to stay alive.
