Visiting my brother in early March in Anchorage for the start of the Iditarod and then driving down to Homer for a few days of bald eagle photography. Has anyone been in the winter and have any advice? I plan on just shooting from shore; is it necessary to get on a boat? I plan on bringing my 200-600, 70-200 and 20-70.
I've only been in late summer, but if primary target is eagles, you may not need to go out in boat. Foley is right, Anchor Point is a great spot for shooting them on the beach with mountains in background. Also saw eagles at spots along the Kenai River. I haven't been in March, and that is early for migration birds, but you could boat out to Gull Island from Homer. We took a water taxi around the bay out of Homer for a couple hours, and that was fun. We saw decent number of birds, puffins, murre, kittiwake, etc., but that was August. Have a great trip!
