p.1 #1 · Phone cameras revisited?

IIRC there was a certain amount of loose talk, including by Maximum Leader Fred, about institutionalizing discussion of phone cameras. Am I correct that nothing came of it?

For voice, text, and checking email, for me almost any old phone will do. I do care about coverage in the "bush", but these days that seems pretty good with all carriers. At the moment I use Samsung/T-Mobile but have no tribal loyalties.

For those who are committed to iPhone the camera question is much simplified, but it looks like there are exotic phones with better spec camera systems than Apple/Samsung, thinking in particular about Vivo, which has limited availability in the USA where many of us reside.

Is anyone using a Vivo phone in the USA or thinking about it? I should say that my interest in Vivo is based on concrete specifications, not that they have somehow acquired the right to put Zeiss logos on their phones.

I was looking at a Xiaomi phone a while ago because I liked the image quality. However, at the time the global version of the phone did not have all the US 5G bands, and of course there was no US version. Some of the bands might be redundant, but if I remember correctly some of the high speed ones were missing.I have no idea if the same is true for the Vivo phones, but I would definitely check before purchasing one.

Yes, band coverage needs to be checked, for sure. In the case of T-Mobile and Vivo, the phone fails to cover three bands, but they are super-high-frequency bands that T-Mobile uses in the highest density urban areas, I think. I don't think that would be a problem for me personally, but band coverage has to be looked at.

In any event, there seems to be little interest in this.
