p.1 #1 · Any mobile apps for Fuji to help with taking self-portraits?

Hello everyone,

I’m about to acquire a GFX camera and am wondering how much I’ll need to adjust my workflow to this new set of tools.

Do any of you take self-portraits using a remote shutter release?

If so, how do you manage your composition and verify critical focus?
Do you stick with the FUJIFILM XApp, or if you’re an Apple user, do you prefer Capture One mobile?

From what I gather, the official XApp doesn’t have focus magnification.
If you’re using manual glass and relying on zone focusing, it seems like a real challenge to ensure your shots are actually sharp.
Is the experience any better with Capture One?
Or are there other third-party options I haven't discovered yet?

Up until now, I’ve been a Lumix user. Those cameras are incredibly lucky to be supported by FieldMonitor by Adam Wilt - a tool that adds professional on-screen guides like waveforms, various histograms, a vectorscope, and 3D LUTs. Most importantly, it allows me to enable focus magnification and move it around the frame remotely.

I’d love to find something comparable for the GFX system, though I realize that might just be wishful thinking...

Regards!

I've tried to make the Fuji app work, but it just doesn't. It refuses to connect even though I've paired the phone and the camera successfully earlier.

So, I just use 10 second timer and run.

Yeah, I’ve had a similar experience when trying to use it with the X-T50.

Funnily enough, I also gave in and relied on the self-timer. It’s not so bad if the terrain remains flat, but once you go trekking... you've really got to be careful. Better not to lose any teeth during that frantic run back into the frame!

And it worked perfectly! I try to waste as close to zero time on apps that are trying to do something I can easily do without them. My neighbor proudly showed my how he can dim his house lights from a phone app. He's an otherwise intelligent person so I guess some derive personal satisfaction in the journey, .

Yeah, I stay away from apps if I can, and I use my phone as little as possible. However, there is no other way to remotely trigger the GFX cameras that I know of. Which is really a pity.
I'd love a simple IR remote, like many other camera makers use. Sigh.

Edit: 10 seconds is often too short for selfies, IMO.

Its not quite as simple as a remote but close, I haven't seen or used it. I have set my interval shooting up for 20 seconds and 2 photos. When you select it, you burn a shot then in 20 sec it takes another. But there are no beeps or alarms so that method kind of sucks. But if 10 sec can't be done, it does work.

Welcome to the GFX world 🙂 I do self portraits with my GFX from time to time and the workflow is doable but definitely more basic than what you’re used to on Lumix. XApp works fine for framing and firing the shutter but you’re correct about the lack of remote focus magnification, that’s the main frustration, especially with manual lenses. With AF glass it’s less painful, but with manual lenses I usually end up pre focusing, stopping down a bit and relying on depth of field rather than truly checking critical focus from the app.

I use this and it works great. I often use it when taking our family portraits while hiking and traveling.

Hello once again.

After almost two months and some trial and error, what you see here is the only setup I’ve found to be truly reliable and useful when shooting with manual glass on a Fuji body.

Just a plain, old HDMI cable paired with a 16” portable monitor running off a power bank.

This setup lets you utilize Dual Display, which (IMHO) is the absolute GOAT tool for portraiture. It gives you the full composition on one side and a magnified focus assist (with focus peaking) on the other.

Set the camera to Continuous Low drive mode, engage the self-timer, use your phone as a remote shutter release, and you’re good to go.

Now, if only all of this was possible within a single mobile app...

The included sample shot was taken with Thypoch Simera 75mm f/1.4 wide open. At that aperture, at that distance (around 1.1 m) the depth of field is roughly 2 cm.
No cropping, just a tiny bit of vignette correction (because this lens does slightly vignettes on GFX).
Finally: a 100% crop to confirm focus and sharpness.

Regards!

10 yearsago I had a Sony nex 6, the remote app worked perfectly. I sat in the front row at my son's wedding with the camera on a shelf at the back and my phone on my lap, took dozens of shots, no problem.
But FUJI? 2 Apps, 3 different cameras, hopeless, absolute pot luck whether they will connect. Crap software.
