Hello, just a small rant or disappointment. Did you know that if you buy, like I did, a camera from someone either on this site or anyplace if your name is not on the original receipt you can not buy a CarePak? I bought an R5II it was 30 days old, I had the original receipt that showed the purchase date. I was within the 90 day window to buy and I did buy through the Canon website. So fast forward, I had a spill with my camera, and yea I had a CarePak, sent it in and they informed me my CarePak was not valid as my name was not on the original receipt. Unfortunately, I bought both my RrII's that way and both of my CarePaks! AND, they took my money for the CarePaks, let me activate them and never said, by the way, these are not valid....
If you read the CarePak info it says must be bought within 90 days of original purchase, it is not clear you have to be the original purchaser.
I guess I'm paying for the repairs. Just wanted to put it out there so nobody else makes the same mistake I did. To be fair, I have not received it yet, or anything saying I will, but Canon said they would refund the CarePak costs.
Have a Happy Holiday Season and Merry Christmas!

That stinks but does not surprise me, but I would like to point out for anyone who may read this post, that if the original purchaser bought the CarePak it can be transfered to the second owner. The original owner has to request the transfer.
I am currently ruing not having CarePak in my R3. A couple hundred when I bought it vs $1000+ now.
Oh well, nothing I can do about it now. Just have to keep a better grip on it in the future. (Broken EVF and dislodged body due to a tipped over monopod.)

Mine is in for a blown over tripod as well and I’m dreading the repair cost especially since I thought I had a CarePak.

Yes, that is what they told me. I have bought a couple lenses from here that were through a party that goes through a camera store. It has worked well, good price, great experience, but now I know if I do that I can’t buy a CarePac.
The CarePak (or CarePak+) must be purchased by the original owner. If the camera or lens is sold/given to a new owner, the CarePak or the CarePak+ must be transferred to the new owner.
If you are the original purchaser of the Camera and the CarePak, Canon allows you to transfer the CarePak (CarePak+) to the new owner as the one-time transfer. The original purchaser has to send email with all the details (including the new owners name, address etc.) and Canon will transfer it.
I have done in the past multiple times.

This is new to me. How does this differ from my Canon Pro Services Gold service? For non-pros, a different plan, a supplement, or is Carepak consumer-oriented?

You can buy a 2 or 3 year CarePak that covers the item for any breakage and gives you shipping both ways and cleaning. So thinking I had a CarePak I was expecting it fixed for free, which it would have been if the CarePak they sold me was valid. Again, I did not know the 90 day rule was only for first/original owner of the camera or lens or whatever. I’m most peeved they did not bother to tell me it was not valid till I tried to use it.

All my camera gear is covered by a separate writer on my home owners policy. Covers theft, damage, etc.
I have insurance as well. I can submit a claim, but I’m assuming that it like any insurance will go up significantly if you make a claim. So the question is to submit or not, lost or stolen I’m buying a new $3,000 or so camera, worth the claim. But at this point a $500 repair may not be worth the increase in premium.

Two things.
Why pay for insurance if you are afraid to use it? Speaks to problems with the industry more than us.
That said, I've had to make small claims against my home owners policy a couple of times over the years. Rates never went up.
Maybe USAA is better than others because I do hear people express the same concern as you all the time.

Well thanks, got the repair quote, $500. But that could go up, just a quote and what I had to pay to get them to start work!
Yeah, mine went from around $1000 to about $2500. And that's after the CPS Platinum Discount was applied. I may become a CarePak ambassador after this.

Man, I guess that don't make them like they used to. Years ago my tripod mounted Minolta (can't remember which 7 series it was) was ran over by a charging moose. Had a Sigma 400/5.6 on it. Nothing got damaged which did surprise me. Are these all plastic now or something?
“This Service Contract covers Products purchased as new or factory-refurbished and manufactured for use in the United States...”
The terms indicate that the person applying for CarePAK must purchase the product from an authorized Canon dealer. Those conditions would then exclude gray market and used products from coverage. You could dance around that by having the original buyer purchase CarePAK and send it in for you. Not a handy situation unless they live next door.
