p.1 #1 · Perfect Ice

The way the lake froze over quickly, followed by snow, then temperatures high enough to melt the snow and finally a very cold night to re-freeze it all, has resulted in ice that's smooth as glass and perfect for skating. I went through the ice on this lake about five years ago and was able to get myself before the rescue crew got there, so I won't go out until we've had a few more very cold nights to thicken it up. That was not a pleasant experience.

Cool shot, scary story. How did you get yourself out?

While living in Iowa, I grew up on hockey skates Brent. Was playing ice hockey on the Des Moines river in Ft Dodge when I was 5-6.
When we moved to Maryland,(10yrs old) people laughed at my "skates" thinking they were some oddity! They only skated with figure skates here. I had the last laugh!
I skated until I was in my 40's.
Great composition! Brings back very fond memories!!

Thanks, Jim. I was able to get one leg up and onto the ice and kind of roll myself out. Another stroke of luck was that I was carrying a camera with a telephone lens and managed to keep them out of the water. There was a regatta going on at the time and two Park Rangers saw me go through and came racing over to the shoreline in their pickup truck all set for a rescue. I was nearly to the shore by the time they arrived and I think they were a little surprised.

Thanks, Dan. I skated until I was out of my teens but haven't since then. Don't know why because I used to love it. Never used hockey skates though.

Beautiful capture, Brent—fantastic how the sparkles of reflected light give depth and proportion to the silhouettes.

Very scary experience, I am not sure if I could have your ability in the same situation.

When I was a kid, we had a series of "Minnow ponds", just down the bank from Grand Lake. They were all grown up around the perimeter, this sheltered them from wind and the ice was always glass smooth, unless it snowed, partially thawed, and re-froze. We played a lot of hockey on those ponds even though we all had just figure skates. Thanks for the memory, Brent!

Thanks very much, Marcelo. Adrenaline helps a lot in those situations.
