Thanks Caleb. Yep, that 200-400 lens is a lens I think many photographers have been sleeping on. To be honest, I think it's because of the f4 aperture and so many people get it beat into their minds that they have to always shoot wide open at f2.8. With the incredible high noise capabilities of today's bodies, that's just not as critical as it was years ago when shooting at f2.8 and ISO3200 introduced a LOT of noise into images.
I'll be making a video about that lens as we get closer to football season. I've been VERY happy with it!

I had zoom and prime lenses and i was zooming a lot and use prime and i struggled a lot, i just kept going and i improved with both the zoom and the prime lenses, it doesn't matter people can afford or not, people can afford 50mm as kit lens or some cheap prime lenses, i can afford some cheap prime lenses before i can afford a zoom such as 70-200, but your point is very very clear for those new or one zoom lens shooters which i agree, i also remember few times i forced myself to stay with one focal length, not necessary the longest end, i mean i could use at 120mm or 150mm not 200mm, sometimes also 70mm is giving nice frames, and i don't talk about sports here, but as long we are at sports topic then yes, some indoor sports can be done with 70-150 more than just 200mm, i remember i was shooting football in very small field for those public for fun not pro and i had difficult time to use 300mm prime or even 70-200mm at 200mm, i was mostly at 70-120mm than 150-200mm.
Another field that it was forcing me when i was using 100-400 is birding, the lens is push pull and if i twist it i can lock it at any focal length, it has exactly same your tape idea, i was just commenting as joking and fun not to offend or annoy, never meaning that, your idea is great and good principal to shoot tight at one FL, but it shouldn't be at only longest end, it can be anything, even 100mm if someone want to shoot closer up actions, even with 70-200 at 70mm i sometimes miss actions near of the goal my side, the point for me is that practice is always the best teacher using whatever method, me and all photographers i met in fields we never used the tape method and we all improved already.

Is this an RF version of lens? And is that built-in TC always there and can be turned off or even removed?
I don't mind shooting at f/4 some games i was even shooting at f/3.2 or f/3.5, so at 400mm if i use f/4 it will be almost equivalent to 300mm f/3.2 or f/3.5 maybe not sure, and if this lens is affordable price, then i will buy a mirrorless camera in no time soon for this lens, but if it is an EF version then not interested, i will pass.

The Canon 200-400/f4 lens is an EF lens and I use the RF adapter without any issues. And the TC is built in so one can literally shoot at 400/f4 for a set of images and quickly switch the TC and be at 560/f5.6. Oh, and that zoom range is almost like it's made for field sports. Hope that helps.
