Most settings remain unchanged, unless you're coming from an ancient version.
The only things I've had to adjust so far have been:
- "limit focus areas", because the new focus areas enable 10 new options
- enable deleting from both cards without extra steps
This firmware update is even more surprising than the one for the A7RV, given Sony's past record. This bodes well for the future! As with the A7RV update, I appreciate that the LCD display rotates from landscape to portrait format as you turn the camera. I also expect to use the XS spot and customizable focus areas a lot.
I wish, however, that Sony would add Full Time DMF to the A1. I find it hard to believe it's a hardware issue. I can understand them not including pre-capture, but that would also be nice!
Doesn’t it Have DMF on the left dial (the bottom one with all the focus types, below the shooting mode dial)?

Yes, but DMF is not the same as "Full Time DMF". DMF is restricted to AF-S, whereas FT-DMF works in AF-S and more importantly, AF-C. It's a relatively recent addition to newer Sony cameras. e.g., the mark 2 alpha1 has it but the older mark 1 alpha1 does not. The terminology is definitely confusing.
Has anyone else had the problem of 5 minute lockups after inserting a fresh battery with 3.x firmware? It's the biggest thing I hoping to have fixed in this update.
4.0 is working well so far - camera start-up is faster than it’s ever been.

Is my A1 bricked?
I have the firmware running for more than 1 hour and the LED light is still flashing red?
I'm not seeing anything on the LCD yet
What to do next?

From the website:
If the access lamp repeats 5 long blinks (0.5-second cycle) and 6 short blinks (0.25-second cycle), or 7 long blinks (0.5-second cycle) and 7 short blinks (0.25-second cycle), it is possible you have not updated from Ver. 2.00 or later, or the system software may have been incorrectly copied to the memory card.
In this case, remove the battery and memory card from the camera, prepare another memory card, and then start over from the Saving the System Software Data to a Memory Card section of this article.
Thanks, it turned out the first time I copied the firmware onto the card from my Mac , that copy was bad; tried twice but same result (an hour long LED blinking)
Luckily , the A1 came back alive with 3.0, but had to remove the battery
So I downloaded the firmware again via Creator's App and transferred to the A1 via Bluetooth
The 2nd copy successfully updated
Ah, this is 1 reason , I'm leery to upgrade unless the changes are significant
Case closed (but good lesson for anyone else who have not upgraded)

Faster startup is seen after every FW update and every time it degrades over time. I don't know what is up with that.

Or, is there really any change at all? How slow didn't the camera start when released if every FW update made it speedier?
I have never seen anything on the topic except for "feeling" or "I think but I didn't time it". Maybe it is faster, maybe it's faster in some situations (as when having been turned off for days or for just an hour).
My A1 feels about the same as last week. Maybe a little faster. Lol.

When the A1 was first introduced it did have a slow-ish startup time. However, Sony addressed that pretty quickly in one of their very early firmware updates some years back resulting in near instantaneous startup at that time. I've never noticed any sort of startup time degradation on my A1 since, even after all the other firmware updates that came afterwards. But I am just a test case of one 😎
I've noticed that Sony startup times all the way back to my first Sony A9 vary based on some factor I've never been able to figure out.
I have noticed that if your eye is triggering the EVF sensor it starts faster. But other times it will start faster or slower when camera is just turned on and not up to your eye. I don't know if it is based on how long it has been shut off for or what??
I have always noticed very fast startup (without camera up to your eye) immediately after a new FW update. This has been on all my Sony cameras. After a short while it goes back to the unexplained variability...sometimes very fast, other times noticeably delayed.
