p.1 #1 · Nikon 400mm f/2.8 TC: Internal component moving??

I got the 400/2.8 TC last week and noticed a 'sliding' sound from inside the lens when the camera is off and I tilt the lens forward & backward.

Looking down the barrel, I saw there actually is an internal component sliding forward & back when tilting the lens.

Turn the camera on...and the component stops sliding and produces no sound (i.e. it 'fixes' itself).

Is this behavior normal / expected for this lens?

What component is moving? The VR unit?

Thanks!

The focus group is probably sliding freely without the electromagnetic force used in the focus motor.

Yes, normal. (I know that sort of sound is a bit unsettling, but nothing to worry about.)

I agree with everyone... it is alarming at first, but this is normal for the lens. I've heard this sound from the first day and almost 3 years later, it has not resulted in any kind of malfunction. My lens gets fairly heavy use... thus, fear not.

600 TC does the same. It freaked me out when I first got to use the lens. The 600 is a tank though - its seen some (unintended) abuse and has held up great so far. I would expect the 400 TC to be identical in this regard.
