Hi all,
The annual trip to Bosque was another fun one. You never know what to expect, well, to an extent. You can assume/hope there will be cranes and snow geese and the rest of the wildlife which inhabits the refuge. The weather on the other hand, you hope for the best.
I left my house Wednesday morning and the forecast called for cloudy with a chance of evening showers, I live about five hours from the refuge in southern Arizona. On the way up, the clouds were prevalent, I passed four or five rainbows along the way, a welcomed sight to see as I traveled north.
When visiting Bosque in the early weeks of November, the fall colors in the past have been hit or miss, anywhere from no trees turning colors to a full color pallet of oranges, reds, and yellows. This year it was a nice mix, right in the middle.
With the government shutdown I was worried there wouldn't be much water in the ponds as the staff didn't have a lot of time to prepare for arriving birds. They had filled up the pond just south of San Antonio when heading into the refuge and the flight deck main pond has water in it. The other areas were lacking but there were birds in the field. The first pond I mentioned, if I see cranes or other birds on it, this typically means there are large numbers of birds in and around the refuge. This time around, no birds at all. I was a little worried but after making my way to the main flight deck, there were plenty of snow geese, ducks, and cranes to photograph. The number of cranes at the time, were less than years past but again, more than enough opportunities to capture some shots. Lots of other animals out and about as well.
Weather wise, one full day of off and on rain, fog in the mornings for a couple of days and then a full day of clear skies and nice weather. The fog was great to have as it transformed the refuge and made for some of my favorite images from the trip.
I'm sure by now the cranes/geese have arrived in mass. Bosque is a great place to visit and enjoy, lots of wildlife to photograph and appreciate. I'm going to head back next month for a day or so, should be fun... and very cold. If you've never been, give it a shot, it's worth the trip.

I ran across 18 of them and just out of luck, I was able to capture a few shots of them taking flight. I have plenty of turkey shots with them feeding and walking about, this was a first for me. Glad you like the shots, thanks again.

Great set Hatch. What you have described is much of what is happening right now. Today is our last day and I will shoot the crane pond in he morning before moving on to White Sands. You took many great images and I love all the blackbirds which is something I saw yet did not get to photograph. The photos with the rainbows are special as is the fog which I got to experience before and during sunrise.

Thank you. I have four or five shots in that series, the kestrel was surprised to say the least. The interaction didn't last long but it was fun to witness.
