Really hope there's an answer to how to use external triggers with the new camera.

If you have important devices that trigger via the old short-to-ground method, you can make a converter unit with the Sony Camera Remote SDK on a Raspberry Pi (or equivalent). I did this to connect a MIOPS to my a6700. Designed a PCB hat with a 2.5mm TRS connector on it, got it printed (haven't done much with it but it was fun).

I just picked up a USB micro to USB-C adapter so I could try the A7V with my Syrp genie kit. I used the same cable that works fine with cameras using the micro USB multi-port.

Unfortunately it doesn't trigger the camera using either of the USB-C ports on the A7V. I tried with the lens in both AF and MF.

Based on previous posts I also tried it with an A7C II, A6700 and ZV-E10, unfortunately it didn't work with any of those cameras either.

For the sake of completeness I also grabbed a micro USB cable to test that this new adapter I purchased worked. Had no trouble connecting the A7V to a computer using this set up.

Might have to try that 2.5mm to USB-C cable mentioned before to see if that works between my Syrp and the A7V. If anyone else finds another cable or USB-C remote that works, then please share.

USB-C does have an audio mode, and I am suspecting maybe the only possibility of external trigger / intervalometer is through that based on the suggestions earlier. With my older A7r3s, I tried this intervalomter:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07MWX5CX4?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title

using this audio-USB cable:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BY3ZTZJQ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

And that did not work at all on the USB-C port on the a7r3. But that's an older camera that has the multi port so maybe the functionality is not enabled on the USB-C port on older cameras only newer ones. Or maybe I need a different usb-c to audio cable. The one linked to earlier in the thread was not available.

Just one note for those trying to figure out if USB C replacements will work with the A7V. This is my own experience with a cheap USB C shutter release I bought on Amazon, YMMV.

It works, but only on the 2nd lower bandwidth USB C port. My entire camera went wonky when I tried to hook up XR glasses to USB C (would power down and not come back on without removal of the battery, then would not charge) so that could have been a result of the weird state it was in. I did a reset and things went back to normal, but I have not tried the shutter release since.

Is the shutter app for ios good enough for this intervalometer function? The app is said to be able to connect via USB-c and not use wifi/BT as an option.

Did you try plugging into the genie usb c port used to charge to see if it would trigger the shutter? A pdf from B&H shows that configuration for some cams.

Hope it works. Might be in the same boat soon.

I just found some 2.5/3.5mm to USB-C remote shutter cable for Sony A7CII, A7CM2, A6700, ZV-E1, ZV-E10II ZV-E10M2 A7CR A7V. You can search "Sony A6700 usb Shutter Release cable" on amazon or aliexpress. Some say you have to set usb mode to MTP to make it work.

I can confirm the shutter app or iOS when set up solely as USB-C connection on an A7RIII works. The timed Bulb doesn't go beyond 30 sec for this cam if not on wifi but I contacted the developer and who said this is a bug for this cam that he will quash early next week. I had some other questions and the developer always got right back. May be worth a free trial. I was surprised shutter control was possible for this cam with a multiport, but it does work. I will use it for astro. I wanted a wired solution for Sony and Olympus but this app is hard to pass up. I tried a really high quality data usb c cable and then a cheap one just used for power and both worked.

I have ordered multiple sets of cables and micro USB to USB-C adapters and these are the only ones so far that have worked with the A7V and a wired intervalometer (Hahnel Captur in my case).

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0F83552V8?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1

The Onnoa Smart Timer also works via bluetooth or the cable listed above. It's pricey, but the app is easier to makes changes to in the dark than the Hahnel and can be used for time lapses.
