I’m planning on filling the boredom of winter in with learning artificially lit selfies (until I can convince others to be my subject).

With a Godox trigger on my hot shoe and taking selfies with a z8 and/or ZF, what’s a decent remote shutter release? I dont like using the phone app.

I use the Vello thingy. B&H had it on the Deal Zone a day or two ago. This is the current version of what I bought some years ago. It's super simple to use.
Not sure if it will work with your Godox trigger though. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1619634-REG/vello_fwp_n_wireless_shutter_release_for.html

Thank you. I’d imagine if it makes the shutter fire in gtg. Unless it too needs the hot shoe. Oh it does. Hmmm never mind.

For your Nikon Z8 you'll want this one as it screws into your 10-pin socket built in to the Z8. I have had the SMDV version for @15 years which I think is the OG of this design but Vello now brand it and it is available on BH Photo. Works with AF as well if you set your camera up for shutter press AF or simply takes a shot if you use BBF.

As much as Snapbridge is often a PITA, I prefer it to any other remote release method for self portraits or any time you are not behind the camera. You get a preview of the image and can adjust the AF point, composition, camera settings, etc., which comes in handy if you are dialing in your set up so that you don't have to move from your position.

For any other remote release application, other options are preferable!

It’s so easy to close out by accident. Takes forever to link. And in auto area with people, the boxes go to my eyes but my eyes are often not in focus. And the phone is kind of clumsy.

Both units that JB and I referred to will work via 10-pin socket. The Freewave Plus that I recommended has a cold shoe - all communications go through the 10-pin or the DC-2. The cold shoe is only there for you to attach it to something (in practice, the thing is light enough that I often let it dangle by the cord).

The Micro is small enough that the entire receiver fits on the 10-pin. If the form factor is something you cannot compromise on, the Micro is your best bet.

The Nikon WR-R11a/WR-T10 Remote Controller Set - https://store.nikon.ca/p/wr-r11awr-t10-remote-controller-set/4255

Ultra small/light, needs no extra batteries on-body, enables SB-5000 off-camera use (if you decide to try an OEM flash), and if you even get another body you can do things like simultaneous release.

Then you will have the perfect setup and excellent value from the WR-R11a. The combination is controlled through Nikon's Unified Flash Control - menu items on the body. I put "Group Flash Options" at the top of My Menu, to get to it with one button.

I think UFC is available through NX Tether too, but have not tried it.
