p.1 #1 · Munich in mid-December

Folks,

Headed to Munich (with a 2-day side trip to Prague) and surrounding areas in a couple of weeks. Any recommendations on good locations for photos? Day trips no problem.

We're also going to see the Krampus events on the 14th.

Cheers,
Chuck

As it happens, we were there close to that time last winter. There’s really a lot to see and photograph right in Munich then. The central city was packed with people when we were there, in part I suppose because of the large Christmas Market. There are lots of opportunities to photograph people and architecture if that is your thing. (For something unexpected, ask around about the spot by a bridge where people _surf_ in Munich…)

We visited last winter with relatives who have lived in Germany for decades, so in some ways we probably saw a bit of a different side of Munich than many visitors might see.

When you get there, ask around about the surfers. (There’s a section of the river that passes under a bridge and creates a nicely shaped standing wave, and surfers enter from either side, spend a short time riding the wave, the exit for the next rider. It is quite a thing and was a big surprise to us — being from California where surfing is done in… a different way.)

We also went for some long walks outside the busy (though interesting) central area, and that took us to quieter areas that were worth a visit.

I was in Munich 20 years ago and they had surfers there at that time. It's more of a wave in a river type of vibe than a real beach. I was in Prague more recently...

The Charles Bridge is obviously iconic (especially at night, if there's some fog in the air, it gives the area a very atmospheric old-world quality),

The top of the clock tower in the Old Town square has wonderful panoramic views, especially late in the day, a couple hours before sunset.

Around the Prospect at Hanavský Pavilon vista point, you can get a shot of a few of the bridges lined up very nicely -- also better late in the day or around sunset.

The area around the Prague Castle can be quite nice at night, if you are into street scapes.
