The usual travel gear question with a twist

p.1 #1 · The usual travel gear question with a twist

I was almost sold, Z8, 14-24 for landscape, 24-120 for casual shooting and landscape and the 58G adapted vs the native 50/1.8S, did some test with the 58G and it is all besides reliable on the Z8, very much probably there is to learn the Z8 AF system but I am lazy, will still take it around to figure how reliable it is but now I have two options, take the Z8 and the D850 (initially thought of Z8 and Z6II), the former with the 14-24 and 24-120 and the latter with the 58G (which would be also adapted on the Z) and maybe the 85/1.4D for some portrait session (I have the 85/1.2 but too big to take during a trip) or both Z and leave the 58G home and take the 50/1.8S which is not as dreamy as the 58G but very capable and 100% reliable.

What would you suggest?

2nd option. Leave the 58G at home. The Z6II is much more convenient to take on trips than the heavier and bulkier D850 (btw, are you sure the D850 + 58/1.4 combo is spot on when precise focus is needed at the wider apertures?). If you need high-res (i.e., landscapes), use the Z8. Anyway, 24 Mpix are enough even for landscapes ... I'd crop Z8+24-120 files for more reach.

Ciao!

Can you please elaborate what you mean by the 58 1.4g being unreliable on the z8? In my experience the 58 1.4g is a much more releable lens on the z8 (and mirrorless in general) due to the on sensor focusing. When I used this lens on my D850, the focusing was a lot more hit and miss, despite extensive autofocus adjustments (+12 I think).

When I first started to use the 58G on the Z6II I was so happy, it seemed much more reliable than on the D8xx, the AF and the IA got me a lot more keepers but recently with the Z8 I am not so sure I want to risk using it, yesterday I got a bunch of slightly out of focus shots, I am sure it's my laziness at not being willing to learn and use the AF which is a way more complex task than it was on the Z6II but when it locks on the eye and then I find the focus slightly in front of behind there is little room for my poor knowledge of the system I guess, I just find the native 50S spot on but I still have to experiment both, maybe side to side but when making for my next trip I am almost sold on leaving the 58 at home.
