p.2 #2 · Hasselblad X2DII-100C and Associated Lenses

Good Morning AI,

I really hadn't planned to demonstrate the dynamic range of the camera, but that series of images sure did. When we made another orbit I shot with the Canon R5II/24-105Z and, wonderful as that camera is, it could not come close to reproducing the dynamic range in that shot. The Hasselblad color science is amazing, difficult to quantify, but obviously there in every capture. Those images are 14 bit, didn't shoot RAW, so there is even more range left at 16 bit RAW. I was already dealing with too many new variables so I decided not to push it by adding RAW to the mix.

When the action got heavy I switched to the R5II just because of my experience level with the X2DII at that point. I do feel like it would have worked, fewer captures of course, probably some misses.

Picked up my X2DII and the 35-100E, time to put it to work. I was told by a source who shall remain un-named that I could flip it today for double what I paid for it. Prople are apparently shelling out 10K for the 35-100 E , and several grand over list for the body. Things are getting a little crazy out there. I think I’ll hang on to it and sell what comes out of it………..🤣

I don't believe for a minute that anyone is paying 10k for the 35-100 on a regular basis, based on listing prices on this very forum.

Well I guess you can’t believe everything that you hear. I’m just going by the guy who offered to buy mine for that amount before I left the store.

He was leaving on “the trip of a lifetime” and wanted that lens . Guess if you are spending tens of thousands on a world trip, a few grand extra for the lens you want isn’t a big deal. Obviously a unique situation, but he claimed that's what they were going for. Really doesn't matter to me, cuz mine isn't going anywhere but to work.

With the Thanksgiving rush and my travel assignments I haven't been able to put the X2DII to work yet but a couple of portrait experiments told me everything that I need to know about the 35-100E. The bokeh of that lens get's me a similar feel to my Canon 85/1.2 and that is nice territory. I was a little concerned that the aperture range might not allow for that thinnest of depth of field, but it's going to work out nicely.

Next lens that I have coming is the 20-35, I hope that it is all it's cracked up to be. Seems like those two lenses pretty much cover the gamut.

I’m pretty over the moon about my X2D2 and 55mm. It truly feels and performs like a premium camera that is worth the price tag, instead of a lark for well heeled enthusiasts. I could see shooting pretty much anything with this camera. Phocus I’m kinda meh on.

I feel the same way Speedgraphic, it's a keeper. When I sold all my Hasselblad film gear and the company kind of fumbled around in the digital market, I lost all interest in their product line. Stories about $30,000 digital backs with over heating and various reliability issues, sadly I thought my Hasselblad days were gone forever. Enter DJI, exit venture capital pirates and Hasselblad is returning to it's great roots.

Oh, Phocus, yeah I'm with you on that. Canon has tried to get me to use and promote their processing software, and while it is more capable than Phocus, it's still one step above a virus.........

I'm going to take the X2DII up to shoot air to air images this week, looking forward to really getting to know it in that environment. I agree it is not just an esoteric piece of equipment, it can be a real workhorse like it's predecessors.

When it came time to liquidate my Hasselblad film cameras and accessories, I just couldn't come to grips with the idea of parting with my very first 500C/M. The camera had been such a faithful friend over thousands of assignments and millions of miles, so it sits in a place of honor in my hangar office. Every once in a while I open it up, exercise the shutter, and just hold it for a bit. Lot's of memories in that camera.

Hey, I got time in one of those! Not in Thunderbird livery, just a regular ol' white rocket version...

This thread is great and I love seeing the older photos too. As a long time Sony user I have lusted over the X2D series for years now and with the upgrade it has made it even more difficult. I am seeing the original X2D selling for sub 4K and it is making it really hard to choose. If I pulled the trigger I would want the 20-35 and the 55.

Did any of you all own the X2D before purchasing the II version? If so besides AF & joy stick, what are the biggest improvements that fit in your workflow? With the newer lens, was the AF really that " bad " on the X2D?

I have a few jobs incoming in Patagonia and Bahamas that I would love to see this camera in the mix.

Any insight would be welcomed!

There is also continuous autofocus now and the X2Dii body is slightly ligher (around 60 grams).

For sure, but the CA is only with the 35-100 and 55, correct? I am used to hauling equipment so the reduced weight does help but not a huge factor.

The older Nittoh lenses and the 20-35 only support AFs. All the other new V, P and the 35-100 support AFc. Additionally the X2D supported face detect and the new camera supports eye detect. There’s the extra buttons, joystick and the improved flip screen.

Focus speed is a mixed bag. The newer lenses are good on the X2D. Not quite where the GFX lenses are but close and no AFc. The X2D2 mostly equals the GFX cameras now. With the older Nittoh lenses things varied. Some were OK (ie: not great but usable) like the 35-75, 90 etc and some were molasses like the 120 macro and 80mm.

For people and moving things the X2D2 is a significant upgrade. For general shooting, landscapes and stationary portraits the X2D is just fine. Also flicking to manual focus with a V lens is a great experience and you can easily use zone and spot focusing techniques at will. I travelled the world with the X2D and except for wildlife and some really dynamic scenes never really felt the need for more. However the X2D2 certainly expands the shooting envelope of the system a lot.

Likely you cajole shoot a X2D body and move it on with little loss so it seems a smart way to trial the X system. You could latter add an X2D2 for a really special 2 body kit if you find a use for AFc later on.

Yesterday I did some scouting shots for an assignment that I have next week, it was not quite ready prime time so I took the opportunity to get familiar with the subject. First thing I realized was that the 20-35E was going to be necessary for a number of perspectives so I ran over to my supplier and picked up the one that they were saving for me. The client is putting the finishing touches on the interior of the building and detailing all the vehicles this weekend and early this week.

This project seemed like a fitting start for the working life of my X2DII.................

Excellent! The portraits I have taken on the X2DII are unlike any other camera I’ve used. The images just pop, come to life more than any other camera I’ve shot on.
