whenever I buy equipment, at the moment of sale and even before it's shipped, I send a note to my insurance agent to add it to my personal articles insurance. As such, whenever I'm buying or selling gear, I almost never require or buy insurance because I can (from experience) easily collect from my carrier.

I have had a few transactions not occur, because the buyer wants a cheaper price via uninsured shipping via the cheapest route. I always refuse, precisely because of cases like this. Shipping insurance is the cheapest way not to eat thousands of dollars.

I always insure as well, it's something like $1 per $100 on Pirateship, and they've paid out a few claims to me before with no issues.
PirateShip is, in my opinion, the best value. I always insure everything I sell on FM. Even for a $7,000 camera, the insurance only costs me $70. It's worth it for the peace of mind for both me and the buyer.

Agree 💯
Buyers will haggle over $25 and expect coverage like B&H would.
Generally the members here with good feedback can be trusted, but it is a big leap of faith to pay thousands of $$s via F&F that I see in many listings. Things can and will go wrong. On my part, if someone is paying me via F&F I will insure the package on my dime anyway.

Whenever I sell an item here, I always insure it for full value with the intention of refunding the sellers money immediately, and taking the burden of dealing with the insurance people and getting a refund after the fact. To me, that’s the only right way to do it.

Any updates on the resolution of this missing camera?

I bought a camera here from @shotbybusch. The package was delivered on Saturday, but all that was in the box was some bubble wrap and an empty box for the extra battery. Seems the side seam of the box split at some point during shipment, and maybe someone at UPS fished out the contents.
Seller has opened a claim with UPS, but they are not likely to cover much of the cost of the camera, assuming additional insurance wasn't added to the shipment. I thankfully paid with PayPal G&S and have opened a claim there as well. Would PayPal protection cover me in the case of a lost package?
Any advice on what else can be done at this point?
Really bummed as I've been looking forward to this camera! I even bought a replacement OEM body cap for it already since it was coming with a 3rd party one. I was even about to get a thumb grip ahead of time. Glad I didn't go crazy on other accessories yet!...Show more →

Yes! TLDR: PayPal refunded me in the end, just earlier this week.
PayPal requested additional information 3-4 times, likely from the seller as well. They wanted more information about the shipment, the listing details, and some of our correspondence. The last thing they asked was for me to open an official complaint/report with law enforcement. I received notification of the refund 3 days later.
I haven't reached out to the seller yet, but does this mean he's out of luck unless UPS is able to cover him?

It happened to me and other members before, also by UPS. Mine was not as expensive as a Leica. The person took my shipping label and put it on a box with an orange cone inside. Another member had a brick in the box if I remember correctly. I was lucky because the seller used UPS in his building that his office always used, so although not insured, he took care of it.

who knows, who cares. He was wrong to put it on you. In most cases (some exceptions not applicable here), risk of loss is on seller until delivery to the buyer. Glad it worked out for you.

Damn. When I sent my M11 from Poland to Germany for color correction three months ago, I wasn't worried about the risks at all. I simply took it to a UPS warehouse, not some franchise store. And then I picked it up from UPS. Now I'd definitely be worried...
