p.1 #1 · Will Recognition Target Auto mode come to a7R V?

With the latest firmware one can set the "Recognition Target" to Auto on a9 III, and it is no longer an a1 II exclusive feature. Will Sony give a firmware update so that this feature can be used on a7R V? I think a7R V has all the needed hardware (XR processor, AI unit, etc.).

Also note that Sony has stated a new firmware for a7R V will be available in November 2025 to add C2PA support. Will "Recognition Target = Auto" be included in this new firmware?

No one here knows that for sure.

It sounds very extensible too, in a somewhat creepy fashion.

'Human: Detects and tracks human eyes, heads, or bodies. Advanced models can even use human pose estimation for more accurate recognition when a subject's face is obscured or turned away.'

'Recognizes insects, with some models *able to detect the head* for more precise focus.' 'tracking birds, including their *eyes, heads, and bodies*.' 'animal photography, offering *eye, head, and body detection*.' 'vehicles, including *specific parts* like the front of a train.'

The thing about digital is that it always progresses down any unblocked development pathway, to the point of exhausting all promising possibilities. If you have a reasonable imagination, the above para might suggest some ideas for what the the future might hold.

At the point it identifies the hapless subject you are 'tracking', there might be a strong desire to press the shutter release? A useful investigation might focus on how it affects the compositions of its users. And at what point do you cease to be a photographer and instead become reduced to being a device holder and pointer / button presser? No criticism implied, just a few observations on where this is all headed.

We will have to wait until the firmware comes out.

I think they will save it for the A7V and A7VI updates.

Someone does, but they work for Sony and probably aren't giving up any info.

My guess is no, but I'd like to wrong.

"Recognition Target: Auto" has been supported on A7CII and A7CR since firmware 2.00 (April 2025) so I don't think it's been that exclusive until recently...

Don't know what other older models will or will not get support though.

I previously wrote here that A6700 seems to also support it but that was incorrect info based on misleading Google Search results...

I'd just like to say in addition if and when a firmware is released for the A7RV, I'd also like the rotation of the screen and viewfinder information display (as has just been added on the A9 III). All my Nikon Z bodies do this (except the older Z7 II), and it's something I miss when picking up my A7RV ?

I have the A6700 and can't see Auto in the AF Target areas ?

I personally have A7CII and I know it supports "Recognition Target: Auto" since 2.00 firmware update as I use that feature with my AF lenses, and I confirmed that A7CR supports the same (from its Help Guide), starting from corresponding firmware version.

For the A6700 part of the info, I didn't check as carefully and I relied on Google search. Google's AI Overview gave some unreliable results for that query, claiming that A6700 also supports it. I thought it must be true since it should be pretty much the same generation as A7CII and A7CR in terms of SW and camera launch timing, so I didn't dig deeper. After checking the A6700 Help Guide it's true that this feature is not mentioned there, so I was wrong about that part. Sorry about that...

I've now edited my previous response to remove that misinformation about A6700.

The 6700 is the one I'd like to see it on. I didn't realize it's already on the c's (we've never tested them at work).

However Sony is notorious for not providing seemingly minor updates for its old models. I don't remember how long it took Sony to provide a1 breathing compensation, but I do remember the wait is infuriating.
