True, but the bezels are ginormous. You could probably go to near 4in by eliminating those bezels.

Simply put, the Nikon Z8 was created as a more compact and affordable alternative to the Z9. The entire design is based on the Z9, and as a Z9 user, I am very glad for this. The Z8 is a perfect back up for the Z9 and is robust enough to replace the Z9 when one (aka me) wants a lighter package. Furthermore, the camera was released in 2023 and based on the design of a camera introduced in 2021.
It might be more appropriate to ask why the Z6III or Z5II do not have larger screens, as they were released this year. With that said, the ZR is designed as a video first camera that is capable of taking pictures, the rest of Nikon's line is the reverse. As has already been stated, the general UI of a picture first camera relies on actual buttons vs a screen interface. As a shooter who takes pictures in all weather conditions, I value the buttons. I find using a screen interface a real problem in frigid conditions or when it is raining hard.
I wouldn't be surprised if Nikon never introduces a significantly larger screen in their non video-centric cameras.

The screen size tends to grow as digital cameras evolve. It's the iterative model.
However, IMO the ZR should be viewed as a special product and unlike most (video and stills) cameras it has only a few physical controls. This could be a part of a recent trend where most smaller video cameras (particularly intended for young people and social media video creators) don't have EVFs and the screen is the only way of composing. Most video first cameras which are a bit larger than "influencer/social media content creator" cameras have a lot more physical controls.

I suggest the OP think about how he would design a Z8 with a larger screen, that still has all the tilt options, while maintaining all of the Z8 controls (without crowding) and without sacrificing the ruggedness of the design. Oh, and make it cheaper, too. Send your suggestions to Nikon.

I think OP might hit a substantial roadblock right off the rip.

Have you seen the z8 and its ginormous bezel around the screen
p.1 #14 · Why doesn’t the z8 has a larger screen like zr?
You might be able to tether to a 102cm (40-inch) flatscreen on wheels with the a/c power source in your backpack! If that’s still too small, they have larger size flatscreens and your choice of bezels.
Seriously, you can get a larger external monitor if the screen of the Z8 is not sufficient for your specific needs. Videographers use them all the time.

As others have said, the Z8 was designed in 2023 using components from a camera that was released in 2021. They reused as many components as they could to keep the Z8 price down and to take advantage of economies of scale. The ZR is using a best-in-class screen that was probably either 1) not available in 2021/2923 or 2) not economically feasible in 2021/2023. I'm sure the next generation Z8/Z9 bodies will have better screens.
Regarding your original question, the Z8 and ZR are totally different classes of cameras. While the Z8 has strong video capabilities, it offers a lot of other features that the ZR doesn't have. If your main use case is shooting video using the back screen, then the Z8 is probably overkill in many other areas.

How is a smaller body giving more battery life? A larger body can hold a larger battery last time I checked. Are you saying that the Z8 has more battery life than the Z9?

I am saying... Z8 can have better battery life... I believe Sony has better battery ?
I can tell you about DJI that is has much better battery life than Go Pro and they are the same size ?

Why is this thread still going? The Z8 is a stills camera primarily not a video camera. It doesn't need a bigger screen. Nikon has other areas it needs to address before updated it anyway.

I would also prefer a smaller body… but since Nikon went with the big z8 body vs other mirrorless, I just thought it is an huge waste of space to put so much bezel. I don’t think a larger lcd will cost much more.
As for battery life… it will only degrade if u use the lcd often, and if u use the lcd often like me, u will appreciate the increased size.
Or the other way, why don’t Nikon give me a zr with a larger body that has a decent grip and controls. I am ok with the partially stacked sensor.
