p.1 #1 · Thoughts on Shimoda's RST series inserts?
I have decided to try my ha d with wildlife photography, now that I own a 180-600. San Diego is prime pelican territory in the winter, and I have lived here for 13 years without ever bothering to shoot it other than with my cell phone.
All my photo backpacks are hiking packs with panel and top loading. The panel opening is not nearly large enough to pull out a 180-600 with a body attached to it, so I have been thinking about Shimoda's RST line.
How well does the top loading/removal feature work? Can't find YT videos demonstrating it and those things are pricey.

Just purchased the X25RST. It is a mixed bag
It is wonderful for storing a Z8 with 180-600 in a 25-30L bag... as long as you never intend on using the top access panel as shown in Shimoda's videos. The Z8 itself can never get through it, and neither will the 180-600 unless you remove the hood AND the foot. It is basically a somewhat over-priced regular ICU with a zipper on the top panel that you paid around $20 more for but will never use. IMO Shimoda would have been better served offering a conventional ICU without top OR side access for $20 or more less.
I may keep it because the Mystery Ranch Scree 32 has a wonderful full length front zipper that works perfectly for the intended application - easy access to the ICU the old fashioned way. If Shimoda offered a conventional ICU in this size I would return the RST immediately.

I bought the 25 RST for a Sony with the 200-600, but I use it in a bag with rear access. The RST is well made, but it isn't deep enough to pull a large lens/body combo from the top as you experienced. I can get into my pack from the top, but that was never my plan. The RST 40/50 is a better option for top access.
My only gripe with the Shimoda core units is the lack of padded lid/cover, should I need to remove it on a plane.
