Canon DPP ??

p.1 #1 · Canon DPP ??

I’d like to experiment with my many different canon bodiy’s
The oldest is probably the 400d and the newest would be the R50

I don’t/wont sign up for subscription, that’s just never gonna happen.

My question is.. I’m assuming I just google Canon Digital Photo Professional, hopefully I’ll find a link and download onto my ancient win10 laptop??
Would said downloaded link allow me to open RAW files from the entire canon inventory?

Is DPP fairly straightforward to understand?

Are there any members here who actively use DPP as their main editing suite?

Thanks in advance

Yes, DPP works with all the Canon DSLRs including the old ones like the original 1Ds from 2002.
Canon US is blocking my request on the Cloudfront, but you should be able to find the latest version 4.20.11 in various locations.

I use it on a regular basis, after all its free. For deeper edits I use other paid software.

Most any browser will get you to Canon USA or UK to download the latest version of DPP. You can also download a manual while you are at it.

DPP is good for sorting through and organizing your photos by date along with your folder title input and does most of the basic editing stuff to get you by if needed.

Like any other software, there will be at least some small amount of learning curve up front until you get the hang of it.

The two things that DPP doesn't do are support 3rd party lenses and use the GPU, so NR is very basic and RAW conversions are not accelerated.

I think in order to get the latest version to support all your cameras you might need the serial number from your newest camera.

The DPP subscription is only for the tablet app. The Mac/PC version is free at Canon Europe. In the US we have to provide a serial number from any Canon camera before downloading.

There is an older version of DPP I think, that they keep in the downloads if you're using really old Canon cameras. I was playing around with my *.CRW files from a PowerShot G3, last year. I remember using Zoom Browser EX!

The interface is very 2000s, which for me is great. It's not "googlized" (super simplified and trending to white space, with options of cascading difficulty the more small triangles you "unfurl".) With DPP a lot of stuff is two menus deep at most. If that.

I process all my Canon raw files in DPP first. But I've been using it for well over 10...maybe 15 years. I used it because it was included with my camera(s) at the time and though it's not the fastest raw processor out there, I find it's easy to use, yields great color and sharpness (especially with judicious use of the DLO modules which are pure magic for some older lenses) and in general very stable.

Don't run it from a slow drive, though. It's not a DAM program, doesn't really cache previews, and unfortunately the noise reduction is slow and just average.

Eventually I pass any serious edits to Photoshop or Capture One. DPP is my raw converter of choice for anything Canon.

The "please provide a serial number" dialogue to download DPP, that's only after you've clicked on the download option of any specific version of DPP. Hell, I was using my EOS M serial number awhile back and still downloaded current versions of DPP.

Try copying this link and entering 123456 for the SN. https://pdisp01.c-wss.com/gdl/WWUFORedirectSerialTarget.do?id=NGE4MjMyODgx&cmp=ABS&lang=EN

I just updated my app today, Windows 11, but all I did was go to the “about “ tab and selected Update. If you have not before downloaded a copy, you can probably find it at the canon site under software for your bodies, enter the serial number for one of your bodies when prompted.

Just enter 123456. It doesn't have to be a real SN. I tested that 3 times today.

I suspect that this is actually driven by an operating system age limitation.

Hmmm . . . however . . . for some strange reason, new operating systems tend to happen around the same time as new cameras!

Whats wrong with a subscription? Paying people to create updates for a product? Its like wanting to pay for your internet or cell service one time ever

DPP only works with Canon RAW files and you have already paid thousands of dollars for the cameras. Only the AI features of DPP require a subscription so far.
Nikon and I think Sony also have free software with limited features specifically for their cameras.
Up until the MILS era one of the reasons I used Canon was because of DPP and DLO. I probably installed it on a dozen machines. Even today I would use DPP for the 5DsR and similar bodies at base ISO. Noisy/ugly cameras like the R5 II benefit a lot from the DXO or other AI denoisers.

DPP will be perfect for the OP. 4.x runs on Win 10 just fine. Some older OS like Win XP or 7 32-bit are not supported and you would have to use DPP 3.x. Just try it!

Google your body, go to Canon site for it, click on Support, then Downloads. It should sense your operating system, then offer compatible DPP options (at least it does here.) It's a bit difficult to learn I suppose, not sure if ps/lr, dxo, etc are easier though, as I've used DPP for years.

There is DPP3 it might require computer having optical drive and a cd from an old camera, which you may already have given your camera collection. Should be able to 1)convert to .iso using software and 2) run it on a computer not having cd drive using software if you need to use it on a computer not having cd drive. Probably easier to learn, but youd probably have to jump through hoops to use it on a recent machine, but 10 might be fine however its not supported anymore unless you got the paid updates though

You should probably download gimp or something to get layers, sharpen and resize for the web, etc. But it does have clone tool and basic resizing etc

I started using DPP exclusively about 3 months ago. It is different, and it is a bit slow. It is crippled for working with JPG files, so I shoot exclusively RAW these days. I am currently playing with CRAW (40% smaller files) with no discernible difference from regular raw files. I am using a 90D.

I have experimented the Adobes Digital Negative Converter, and find it, and Adobe Photoshop Elements essentially useless. Adobe forces you to use Camera Raw, then move your files to PSE. PITA. DPP is way easier.

Picking a random DSLR on Canon's support site shows that DPP v4 is available for Windows 10, though the last version for the non x64 version of Windows 10 is from 2019, so will not have support for newer cameras. DPP for Windows 10 x64 version was last updated a few months ago, so it seems Canon is (or was) still providing updates. I'm not a Windows user, so not familiar with the details around different versions of Windows 10, etc.

I used DPP for a long time until I needed a faster workflow to handle processing large image sets. IMO the strength of DPP was you got 'authentic' Canon colors and good sharpening (at that time, not sure now). Back then I even used it to run noise reduction on jpeg files from RAW exports through Silkypix (from a non-Canon camera). At the time I thought it was pretty good. The downside of DPP back then, and maybe still relevant today, was the lack of ability to apply local edits (dodging & burning, etc). Therefore DPP was always the first step in a rather tedious workflow chain that usually also included localized adjustments in Photoshop.

I think the OP is normally an in-camera jpeg shooter and usually avoids any post production work on the computer. DPP would basically be a step up from this by remaining faithful to Canon's color science while allowing basic corrections such as white balance, color and tonality. IF the OP was looking to get deeper into postproduction with an 'all in one' app, then Lightroom, Capture one or DxO PhotoLab might be better options. Though not all of those are available non-subscription. There are probably others.

I am using DPP 4.20.11.0, 64-bit. It does do local edits. If the OP is a JPG shooter, it is extremely easy in DPP to just apply your chosen Picture Style w/memorized parameters to any/all raw files, then export JPGs.

If it matters, I just moved to Windows 11 64-bit. It can preview Canon raw and c-raw files directly from my 90D. No conversions needed.

Yes, I currently only shoot JPEG’s but I’m finding the more I zoom in the more the image breaks up.
I’m hoping to experiment this weekend 👍🏻

DPP is going to give you the most accurate rendering of EOS camera RAW files. Many folks prefer what they gat from their software like Adobe products, Capture One and DxO. Personal preference.

It doesn't have the power of the pay/subscription products, but if you aren't doing heavy lifting it is good.

Nina Bailey has a relatively inexpensive eBook that addresses the program. https://www.eos-magazine.com/shop/index.html?store-page=Software-guides-c161683068

Give DPP a try. I've been a Canon digital shooter since the 1D and an early reason I preferred converting RAW rather than using Canon's in-camera jpegs was because those jpegs were pretty soft compared to what could be gained from basic RAW conversion. Canon's more recent cameras and in-camera jpegs have improved a lot in this respect, but if you're using older cameras, which I believe you are, you may see a noticeable image sharpness improvement. That said, it probably won't be a huge difference, but there should be better sharpness at the pixel level.
