Wednesday morning I came across two porcupines have sex, (porcupine style) and it didn't look like fun. In my experience porcupines are very shy and once spotted they waddle away and disappear quickly. These two were different, they climbed a tree, made all kinds of strange noises then they came back down. When the female came down I noticed six quills in her face. To my surprise they came out into an opening under a tree and let me enjoy their company for 20-25 minutes. I got down as low as possible to shoot them at eye level. It was so much fun to watch them. They were totally relaxed and very affectionate with each other. They acted like they couldn't care less that was there. I slowly backed away and left them alone. It was definitely a first for me.
Fantastic images Greg, these are shots one rarely gets good for you. The low angle you took to take these shots really enhances the image. Looks like the one with the quills in its nose, stuck its nose in the wrong place. Super job!
Pretty sure that's " domestic abuse " . These are a first for me never seen one ( let alone two, getting busy ) in the wild. Just a great subject ,shot & presented very well. Super work. Voted.
The quills to the female's face are a bit of an eye opener... I never even thought about porcupine's quilling each other, so yeah, that happens! Now whenever I see a porcupine I'll be thinking of the old Nazareth song, Love Hurts! Ouch!
If she got them in her nose where did he get his??
Seriously, this is a rare moment and even more rare that you photographed it. When you see a little one you know what special act it took to create it, but to see in person...that's impressive.

Thank You Louie. I was shocked that they hung around for so long. It was a treat. First and probably last time I will be looking porcupines in the eyes. Thanks again, I truly appreciate it.

Thanks Eric, I really appreciate it. When they both came down out of the tree I thought they were dried pine needles. I'm like you it was a surprise.
