Lens Shade Screw

p.1 #1 · Lens Shade Screw

Greetings! Posted in the Miscellaneous, but not much traffic there. That, or there are no other suggestions? So posting here.

Forgive me for not knowing what to call it, but on my Leitz R 28mm (Series VII) there are two screws at the edge of the front of the lens to which the lens shade attaches. One of those two screws was forcibly removed by a frustrated and clumsy owner (don't ask how I know ). Once said owner calmed down (and by some miracle FOUND said tiny screw on the floor), I discovered it could not be screwed back in. FYI-I do a little tinkering on wristwatches so I'm pretty good at working with tiny screws.

Anyway, the question is: what is the recommendation for restoring the screw, short of sending it off for repair? A couple folks on the Misc. forum suggested gaffers tape to secure the lens shade, but I'm looking for other, more refined suggestions if there are any? My other thought was using cyanoacrylate adhesive (aka Krazy Glue) to reattach the screw, but I'm frightened to work with Krazy Glue so close to optical glass.

I expect at this point nothing will secure the screw tightly enough to accept the lens shade, but not really sure. Gaffers tape may be my go-to for keeping the shade on, but that would render the lens cap useless (short of taping and undoing it over and over again). For the moment, the friction fit of the shade is snug enough if handled with the typical care I use with my gear.

Suggestions?

thanks anyway.
I think I'll try masking off the entire lens except for the screw hole (to be safe), and just try Krazy Glue. Maybe it will hold, maybe not. Worst case (presuming I don't squirt the glue into the lens) the shade will stay on with one screw and gentle handling. The friction-fit is still snug enough that the shade will stay put if it doesn't get touched while taking a photo.

Hopefully I turn that frown upside down, and I post a smiley-face with a success story!
