p.1 #1 · Olympus 300mm f/4 makes sounds when focusing?

Hi, I just got a pre-owned 300mm f/4 and curious if this sound is normal?

Yesterday I saw a hawk about 200 - 300 feet directly above me. I aimed up and when I got the bird in frame, it focused quickly. But when I missed the bird, I noticed the focus gear sounds coming from the lens. Sounds were noticeable but not extreme. Curious if this is normal behavior on the lens? I guess for the cost of this lens, I didn't think there'd be sounds like that. I have a leica 100-400 and have never noticed such sounds. I had the focus range set to 4m+

Used on a OM-1 with CAF, bird detect, and 1.4x TC.

TIA

I have excellent hearing. If I have the camera up to my eye, I don't hear anything when the lens is focusing in either horizontal or vertical position. If I place my ear against the lens, I hear a whirring sound when the lens is horizontal, and it is louder when the lens is vertical. Noisier when vertical because lens elements are working against gravity.

My Oly 40-150 f2.8 makes similar, but quieter sounds. Put your ear on your 100-400 and I bet you will hear the lens elements moving as well.

Thanks for mentioning the vertical position... that's how I was holding it... horizontally it's much quieter.
