p.1 #1 · Seeking Canon Part Number

I have a Canon 500mm F4 IS Version 1. I stripped the threads on the tripod mounting screw. I can not find the part number to order a new one. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated . Thanks!!!

The screws should be M3 screws - 15mm long, 3mm thread diameter bolts with a hexagon (Allan Key) drive in the 5.5mm round head.

Might be worth a try:

1-866-481-2569
To order an replacement part, please call 1-866-481-2569. The hours of operation are 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. EST from Monday to Friday. When calling, speak the term "order parts" when the speech routing system asks the reason for your call.

You didn't look hard enough.

Also:

https://www.f20c.com/stuff/canon/partslist/

YA2-3785-000 SOCKET, TRIPOD

That's for the socket into which you thread the tripod/monopod to secure the lens on the tripod/monopod. But the parts manual doesn't indicate a different part for 1/4-20 thread vs. 3/8".

If you mean the screws/bolts that hold the foot onto the lens:

XA9-0431-000

If it's a stripped tripod socket thread, and if you can't get the part any more, you could consider replacing the entire foot with an aftermarket one.

No problem. I added another link, probably the same one I used to download a bunch of these back in 2004 that I still have on my computer (though I didn't have the 500 downloaded).

Seems like they are all the same foot (400, 500, 600). Canon says the part has been discontinued though. I may have to buy a used foot after all. Appreciate the help.

You can try these guys for the parts: http://www.midstatecamerarepair.com and if they don't have them, might be able to suggest other options.

The 500's tripod foot should have two sockets. Are both stripped or can you still use one?

As I suggested, another option would be a third party replacement foot, but a quick search suggests it might be harder to find an aftermarket 500/4 IS v1 foot than I originally thought.

Kirk only lists a mounting plate for this lens but no replacement foot. They probably made one in the past and you could contact to inquire about getting a one-off made. https://kirkphoto.com/contacts

Another option might be Jobu Design in Canada, but their IS v1 plate is out of stock: https://www.jobu-design.com/contact. Their site indicates that the 500/4 IS v1's foot is unique and not interchangeable with the v2 lens.

I also checked Wimberley but they don't list one for the IS v1 lens: https://www.tripodhead.com/products/replacement-feet-main.cfm

And I thought maybe Naturescapes might be another option but they also don't list a foot for the IS v1:
https://store.naturescapes.net/mounting-systems-long-lens-replacement-feet/

And Leofoto is unclear if they have one for the older lens.

I have to check if both are stripped. Again, appreciate the info and help.

I'm pretty sure you can find a replacement foot with A-S for the original 500/4 IS either new or used.
If not PM me next week.

It’s not clear to me which threads are stripped-out on your lens. I’m assuming its one of either the ¼-20 the 3/8-18 threads, or both, that is stripped out.

I have the original Canon EF 600mm f/4 IS. Looking at the parts list’s exploded view drawings I can tell that its foot is entirely different from the 500mm foot including the screws that hold the 2 tripod socket parts and the screws that hold the foot to the lense. (Except for the Canon white paint, I assume).

BTW, one tripod thread socket on the 600mm is ¼-20 and the other is 3/8-18. I use a ¼-20 to 3/8-18 brass bushing with some blue Loctite on my lens.

I suppose the that if only the ¼-20 is stripped then perhaps a machine shop could drill and tap it out to 3/8-18 however they may have difficulty holding on the the outside of the part to do this. I assume that these parts are stainless steel as mine are slightly magnetic. They could definitely measure and machine an entire new tripod socket part from scratch however I would expect that this route would cost more than buying a used Canon replacement foot (if one can be found) or the aftermarket one (as suggested by rscheffler and EB-1), unless you can get a friends & family discount with a machine shop.

If the 3/8-18 is stripped out then it appears that there is no fix for that part except replacing it somehow or machining a new one.

Take it to an engineering workshop and ask them if they can insert a Helicoil (or similar). It should not be beyond the wit of man to repair even a blind tapped hole.
