p.1 #4 · Who has the Sigma 200 f2 for Sony? Thoughts?

After photographing several different sporting events over the past two weeks, I'm finding that a 200mm f2 Sigma coupled with a Sony A1 is working well for sports. While I realize there's a greater demand and tendency for sports photographers to prefer longer glass, for me, handling with a lighter weight lens became a preference for me since I am shooting sports several times a week.

With the high resolution of the A1 sensor, cropping in counter balances the shorter reach of a 200mm.

I wasn't sure this would work, frankly. But over the past year before the Siggy, I have been using the Nikkor 200mm f2 VRII with a D850 - and loving the results. My conclusion was that a high resolution sensor made up for the shorter reach while the f2 provided the background separation I preferred.

No, it's not 400, 500 or 600mm. But it's also not as cumbersome or heavy. For me, navigating up with gear means not only the carry (even with a monopod) but also navigating around other people who occupy the sports fields or courts. I needed to have as small a personal footprint to keep from interfering with the space of others - and being able to move out of the way quickly if play is approaching me. I've seen photographers get run over by players because they were planted with their gear and I don't ever want to be in that position.

While I don't prefer the fps rate limit Sony imposes on the Sigma lens - and this can matter a great deal in sports - there's still a lot to love about the Sigma's performance and results.

The Nikkor 200mm f2 or 300mm f2.8 are very high quality lenses. They are heavy and require a monopod, obviously. Not easy to navigate fields with these weighty lenses, especially if I'm carrying a second body and lens. So, the lighter weight Siggy was a solution for me - and it's working. Photos with both the Nikkor and Siggy for comparison. I threw in a 100-400 Sony for background comparison.

Continuing to enjoy the Sigma 200mm f2 lens for sports. The extra stop in the dark stadiums plus the background separation has proven to make this lens a worthwhile investment when coupled with the A1 camera body.

I have used a 200 f2 for football but not as my primary lens but in place of the 70-200 to take advantage of the faster aperture. I have seen a lot of folks produce very nice galleries with no more than a 70-200 if they are moving with the play and mindful of what it can and cannot do. I prefer the longer lengths as my primary lens over the 200 but the Canon weight-wise wise is not too bad on a harness as a substitute for the 70-200. As for subject isolation and blown out backgrounds I think the 400 produces a nicer image overall. It's interesting as the bodies and lenses progress that at one time people would have been ecstatic to have 15 fps but nowadays it's considered too slow.

Certainly 20, 30+ fps has changed the results for the sports photography world and, in some cases, moments that less often would have been captured.

I agree that the longer focal lengths produce amazing images but there's a big "however comma." The longer fast glass is much heavier and more cumbersome to manage. I watched a photographer at our last local playoff football game lugging what appeared to me to be a 600mm f4 on a monopod plus a 70-200 f2.8, presumably. I was carrying the 200mm f2 Siggy and a 16-35mm (for after-game celebration). As an option, I could have carried a 70-200mm f2.8 for flexibility at the goal line - but I just zoom with my feet instead.

I'm sure I'll catch some flack for using cropping instead of a 400 or 600 lens - but I learned something in my first ever photo class from that instructor back in the 60s and that was: "If it works, USE it."

One other thing I'll add is that my longing for a Sony 300mm f2.8 has been cut short by its (used) $6K+ price tag. I can get one right now which would cost me that plus tax, more around $6700. The 400mm f2.8 and 600mm f4 are 5-figures. The 300mm wouldn't be a weight issue but the longer lenses would be a weight issue. You don't think about this until you're in the field and have to experience how that interferes with your ability to move around. You literally have to set things down and walk away from the longer lens kit in certain instances. You can't walk into a celebratory crowd of players with your wide angle dragging a 400 or 600 on a monopod.

But you CAN be holding a 200mm f2 and a wide angle and the footprint is not noticeable. You can navigate an entire game and not be making a massage appointment and eating Ibuprofen the next day.

At less than 3K, which I bought new on FM, the 200mm Siggy has been a godsend option both in size and price. Yes, 15fps is enough, especially for an experienced shooter and yes, I recommend a high resolution camera body to make this option work best.

There are more than one way to cover a football game body and lens wise. If you run a 400 or longer there will be times when you have to set it down or put it over your neck or back to get wider shots. My ideal combination is the 400 on a monopod, the 70-200 on one side and a 28-70 or 24-105 on the other. You can camp out on the far end with the action coming towards you with a 400. I normally lay it down when I believe it will be too tight and of course that's something of a guess. I like the flexibility to move around when they are inside 25-30 depending on where they spot the ball. You are making good use of your 200 and it does leave you more nimble than the alternatives. I have the Canon 200 f2 but considered, briefly, the Laowa, but the early reviews make me nervous about picking one up. I don't need it but wish the Canon was that light.

I'm testing the Laowa 200MM f2 this week on my Nikon Z9. It arrives later today.

I have the native Nikon F-Mount 200MM f2 (on adapter) that is ~14 years old, which will be my performance "control." If anyone has one of these old Nikons, they will tell you that they are fantastic -- but are a real PITA to use. They are incredibly heavy. It's like carrying around a cannonball.

We'll see how it works out. I, too, saw the Laowa 200MM previews. I would not call them reviews. They sent preproduction models to YouTubers and have since made some tweaks. I'm keeping an open mind.

If I were certain that Nikon would make this lens, I might have been tempted to save up to buy it. But Nikon is releasing lenses at such a glacial pace -- only 1 new "S" (professional) lens in 2025 - and there are quite a few "non-exotic" lenses still missing from the lineup that it could be years before they launch a 200/F2. And at what cost? The F-Mount was $6000 when it launched 15 years ago. Factor in inflation, tariffs, and more aggressive Nikon pricing, around $7,000?

This is not a "core" lens for me. It is a valued occasional-use lens. If I can get 90-95% of the performance of a Nikon Z version (if one is made) and save ~$5000 -- count me in. Others, I'm sure, feel differently.

If I could get the Sigma for Z mount, I would do that in a heartbeat ... but the adapters are just too unreliable at this point.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Give me a couple of weeks as we head into the HS/College basketball season, and I promise I'll be able to provide a full and fair review.

I've just used it for a couple of football games, but as a secondary to a 400MM. I'll use it far more extensively on the basketball court, and that's probably a better testing ground for focus speed.

Image quality and sharpness have been great. I would really be hard-pressed to tell any difference between it and my Nikon 200mm f/2 F-Mount.

It is lighter than the Nikon for sure -- but it's still not a flyweight. It's a little heavier than I anticipated -- but it's far, far easier to use than the old Nikon and takes up a lot less space in my case.

Every photographer is going to have their field preferences - how they prefer to operate. For me - and that's the caveat - I feel the need to pack as light as possible and still get images that pop.

For football - after decades of experience - for HS football games, I just can't justify lugging massive lenses that are only good for about up to the 50 yard line. Sure, it's great to a photographer's eyes to get this perfect moment fully occupying the entire full frame sensor.

But practically-speaking, that's a lot of heavy gear to shlep around, lugging it from end zone to end zone (some games our publication is covering both teams, thus scoring shots for each team.)

I had to think in terms of the reality of what can I carry and not completely wear myself out repeatedly for an entire season?

The Sigma 200mm f2 isn't just any 200mm f2 - although I'd love to hear a verbal battle between any folks willing to debate which one of these fantastic lenses is "the best." Fact is - a 200mm f2 lens - any of them - are so well designed and yield on a resolve level above most any other lens - that it comes down to which one weighs the least and has features I NEED.

With the advent of super high resolution cameras, the reason that a 200mm f2 works so well is two fold and probably obvious.

1.) The background separation gives you results formerly only owned by the long f2.8 or, in the case of the 600mm, f4 wide apertures.

2.) The ability to crop in due to the high resolution sensors - and still get great background separation.

The sheer management the lighter weight 200mm f2 has taken off of me has been ultimately worth it.

p.1 #16 · Who has the Sigma 200 f2 for Sony? Thoughts?

Looping back to fulfill a promise to give a brief review of the Laowa 200mm f/2 lens. I’ve been using it extensively over the past month shooting high school and D2/D3 college basketball. I'm not going to go in incredible depth here nor am I pixel peeping. This is sort of a short-term real world use review. Note that I likely would have purchased a Nikon OEM version of this optic but the company has not indicated any interest in making one for mirrorless. Nikon has relased a total on ONE new S line lenses in 2025. So it may be a lifetime before they get around to it. The new Sigma looks terrific but it's not available for Nikon, and the adapters are still a little wonky, from what I read. All that said ....

Build Quality: 9/10

The lens features a solid metal body, and the tolerances on all moving parts/switches feel excellent. It’s great to have a native Arca-Swiss foot included rather than needing an aftermarket solution. That said, it’s probably irresponsible to make long-term durability claims after less than two months of indoor use. We’ll see how it holds up under regular wear and tear. Still, out of the box, I’m pleasantly surprised—especially given the price point. I’ll also set aside the fact that I’m not a fan of the purple color. Black would have been just fine, thank you.

Handling: 9/10

This is where the lens really shines. I own a Nikon 200mm f/2, which is fantastic—but also like carrying around a baby rhino. That lens is one of my favorites, but the sheer size, weight, and the need to adapt from Nikon F mount pushed me to try this Laowa. In terms of size, it’s roughly comparable to a 70–200mm f/2.8, though it feels ~25% heavier. It’s not lightweight by any stretch, but compared to the Nikon 200mm f/2 it’s a flea. Balance on the camera is excellent. It's a straight barrel rather than the fat-front Nikon where the weight is shifted forward. I used to think twice about bringing the Nikon out due to the “PITA factor.” That’s no longer an issue. This lens drops into my bag easily—it’s like adding any heavy lens, but not like stuffing a Kia into a roller bag.

Focus Speed & Accuracy: 8/10

This lens was widely reviewed by YouTubers before the final production model was released, and focus speed and accuracy were common concerns. Based on my use for basketball, I find it more than capable. It’s 2025—there are no truly slow-focusing lenses anymore. It’s all about fine-tuning autofocus systems that would have seemed miraculous a decade ago. This lens is absolutely fast enough to keep up with college basketball.

Focus acquisition may be slightly slower than some Nikon S-line OEM lenses, but only by a hair . Accuracy is well within what I’d consider acceptable for professional sports use, and I wouldn’t hesitate to rely on it in that context. For perspective, if I had this level of focus speed and accuracy on my old Nikon D5 DSLR, that combo would have been considered king of the hill focus wise. Standards evolve—but I think most users will be very pleasantly surprised.

Sharpness: 8.5/10

I’ll hedge slightly here: An 8.5 overall, but closer to a 9 for my sports use. Some reports mention weaker edge sharpness. That’s irrelevant for how I use this lens. Center sharpness is on par with my Nikon F-mount 200mm f/2, and I’d challenge anyone to reliably tell the difference in real-world shooting scenarios. I’m not pixel-peeping at 300%—I don’t need to. The lens delivers sharpness that meets or exceeds my practical needs. If you need edge sharpness, you might want to do some more research.

Value: 10/10

Remember this is a $1,999 200mm f/2 lens. If Nikon released an equivalent native Z-mount version, it would almost certainly be a $6,000+ lens. The excellent Sigma alternative (not available for Nikon, unfortunately) costs $3,299.
For most people, this won’t be a primary lens—it’s more like a 3-iron in golf: a specialist tool that’s very nice to have. At this price, I think it’s an outstanding value. Time will tell how it holds up long-term, but I’m very pleased with the purchase. If you’re considering one, I’d strongly encourage renting it and seeing how it fits your workflow.

I'll try to add some pictures later,
