Nikon Zf with the 26mm. I've been actually thinking of getting rid of my SL2s and getting a Zf, just because of that lens and the size

But the Zf won't be replacing my Ms

If M didn't exist - and no LTM nor M lenses - my choice would be a mirrorless FF camera, at this point likely preferably the Nikon Zf, another Nikon Z-series, or Sony A7R IV for example.

I wouldn't consider a cropped sensor camera. I would otherwise opt for a Fuji - but since it's APS-C sensor based, it remains a no-no for me personally.

Why no cropped sensor?

Mainly due to my personal preference for wide and ultra-wide lenses ranging from 8 (full circular) or 11 mm fisheye to 21 mm. I shoot much less on the tele side of things.

All of them. Like I do now.

Mostly Hasselblad and my Q3's though. Like I do now.

Nikon D850. So I can still use a fantastic optical VF. Manual focus w the D850 is excellent - better than the D750 I had and light years more accurate than the DF I rented.

This probably would have been my first choice if mirrorless also didn't exist. When Nikon released the D850 I was close to leave all my Canon gear behind where I was very vested in since Canon did not focus at the time on improving the sensor and focused mainly on AF instead. It should take Canon many years until they released "my" wish DSLR which was the 5DsR - never went for it since already Sony FF mirrorless came along with similar higher resolution sensor and DR. This was the cause for me getting my first M lens at the time long before owning a M camera - to adapt a small manual focus lens on my Sony A7R.

Can't believe that cost for either a D850 or a 5DsR is now only about $1K used. If I wasn't so used to more compact M gear, I would get a 5DsR just for fun to use with my EF lens gear. But since I rarely use it anymore.....makes not much sense to vest in it.

No mystery. Canon EF and Nikon F. Leica M was my third system, adopted after I retired. Canon EF was my first interchangeable-lens camera system, that I actually owned, rather than borrowed, starting in 2010. Canon EF remains my main macro system, plus some general photography.

My wife’s primary system was Nikon, from the time she shifted to digital. It made fiscal sense for us to share some lenses, so, I bought a Novoflex adapter, by 2011. I then added pre-owned Nikon 35mm film SLRs. In 2014, I started buying pre-owned Nikon DSLRs. In 2018, I added new Nikon D5 and D850 cameras, a shift to Nikon for most general photography, plus nature/wildlife/birds.

So, the system I use is dependent upon the task at hand, whether AF is important, what lens I want to use. Each system has lenses that I really like, for different reasons.

In the absence of Leica M, I would probably have accumulated more Zeiss SLR lenses, by now, especially Nikon F-mount “classic” and Milvus lenses. Earlier today, before I saw this discussion, I was checking to see what Milvus ZF.2 lenses were still available, from B&H. I might well have bought a Nikon D6 camera, and might even have acquired a Z8 or Z9.

For me, Sony A7CII/R with an E-mount Voigtlander 50mm lens (either the APO or the Nokton).

As for the film camera, I would like to try a Mamiya 6 with the 75mm lens.

After using mirrorless cameras for many years, I really can't stand the click-clang of the mirror anymore (as cool as it may sound on a Hassy 500 series camera).

I often wish I never traded my D850 for my Z7. I pretty much only use the Z7 to scan film, and the D850 was just as good for that as it could AF in live view. Plus it had that built in negative conversion setting which was so cool to preview images. So strange that Nikon did not incorporte that into the Z bodies.

Yes sometimes surprising why well implemented and used digital camera features disappear in future models of the same brand: same with the Sony apps introduced in the Sony A7 and A7 II models which Sony decided to remove in future models. Some were free others needed to be purchased - but some of them were really useful. Likely Sony didn't make the revenue they intended with these camera apps and therefore closed them down.
