At the time when Canva took them over they did state that Affinity's popular perpetual license model will be maintained

A real shame if that happens as I’m a big fan of Affinity Photo 2 it’s perfect for what I need

When I read the AI article I thought it was only a free Mac package, but not so and there are both ARM and MS Windows versions. I downloaded the MS version for my desktop but I'm going to hold off the install until I see/hear more about any issues with this 1st version.
I've been playing with it and the first issue I found is with the Nik Collection from DXO. It launched correctly once I put the plug-ins into the correct folder (didn't find them automatically) but there doesn't seem to be an Apply/Save option in Nik. I guess we'll need an update from Nik for compatibility.
P.S. I also can't import macros I use in v2. That really stings.
I am new, so had to make an account for downloading the Infinity. You need a valid email address as they send a code to D/L. After installation you need to use the same email address to log in. After that it did open without internet access, but I suspect that it will want to phone home again at some point. It's not clear if it will need that email again or if just being connected to the internet is enough.
Does anyone know what the activation and verification policy was previously?

Affinity CEO Ash Hewson has said once it has been activated it can work offline indefinitely. I would save the email, though I would guess you could just log in to your Canva account and get another activation code.
The image adjustments are quite primitive though it did have the lens parameters for a Snoy lens. I cannot figure out how to do even the basic things like saving the output as a TIFF. I think it may be for graphic designers like in advertising or somebody doing page layouts. It's not for basic folks like me not a photographer. I would far rather use C1, DXO, even DPP.
There are a lot of good photo tools; you just don’t know how to use it. I’ve been using it since v1 as a Photoshop alternative and it’s been great. Having said that, I use Photolab as my raw processor and for NR but export to Affinity for final edits. And to save as a tiff you need to use Export.

I'll try to find some use for the Anfinity, but already it has crashed 3 times on large files. It will open a 380MP file (not really that large) but then I cannot do anything and it crashes. I think it could be used as a light version of PS on singles after RAW file conversion. Next I have to figure out the activation part.
One cannot complain too much for the price. I might feel differently if I had just purchased it a few months ago.

Two new features were much asked for:
1. The ability to vectorise a filled shape in a raster image (Photos). They call this “Image Path”.
2. Exporting of accessible ePub files (Publisher).
These aren’t relevant to photography. Reasons for photographers to stay with the old version:
• the file format has changed. The new Studio can read Photo’s files, but Photo can’t read Studio’s. This would be a problem if you wanted to interchange files between desktop Affinity and the iPad version of Photo, since Studio is not yet available for iPad.
• the only video tutorial for the new program is in an unlisted Youtube video by the CEO, whereas there is an entire channel (“Affinity Photo”) with excellent tutorials specific to the old program.
• needless extra UI complexity.
