p.1 #1 · X-E5: Focus Check not resetting to full view - and workaround
When I had the X-E5 on pre-order, Sony launched the RX1R MkIII in a surprise move. So I canceled the pre-order and got one. Wonderful camera.
But then I still wanted to update my Fuji cameras from the X-E3 (which is also a great camera) to the latest sensor offering 2x crop in camera. Low and behold, on my last trip to Berlin I bought one (readily available in both colors) and I wasn't disappointed. Walked the streets of Berlin mostly with the 27f2.8 and the 50f2 (giving me FF-equivalent of 42 to 75 and 75 to 150). Worked absolutely fine.
The X-E5 is everything I thought it would be - in fact it is a clear step towards replacing the X-Pro line in the next iteration. It is bigger but still feels comfortable.
There is one thing quite annoying, though: When in MF mode with Focus Check "on", the camera zooms in when the focus ring is turned - but the it doesn't reset to normal view when the shutter is half pressed. One has to use different controls (such as the joys stick) to reset. Very much hope that Fuji will correct this with a firmware update.
p.1 #2 · X-E5: Focus Check not resetting to full view - and workaround
There is a workaround for this problem (but only for AF lenses, not for MF lenses):
1. Set "Focus Mode" to "AF"
2. Select "AF&MF" "on"
3. Select "Shutter AF" in AF-S to "off"
4. Assign "AF-ON" to a function button.
When you half press the shutter button, Focus Check will zoom in and back out once you no longer press the shutter button. This also has the advantage that pressing the shutter button again will not mess with the manual focus setting.
Fuji needs to fix this problem and go back to the Focus Check behavior of the past.
p.1 #3 · X-E5: Focus Check not resetting to full view - and workaround
There is something else I just noticed: Pressing the assigned "AF-ON" button, one can manually correct focus, too, and the Focus Check zoom will reset to normal view once the assigned "AF-ON" button is released.
