p.1 #1 · I need advice about buying an EF 300 f/2.8 lens for video with an R5

I would like to buy a good used Canon EF 300 f/2.8 L lens for doing mainly low light videos with my R5.

QUESTION 1:
Given my use case of 80-90% wildlife video on a tripod, is the Canon EF 300 f/2.8 Mark I good enough for the task or do I need the Mark II?

QUESTION 2:
Is there anything in particular I should be aware of?

QUESTION 3:
What should I expect to pay?

Thanks very much,
Rudy

Rudy I just sold an EF 300 f 2.8 V1 for a friend, (it was my old lens I had sold her years ago, but she wasn't using it ) to another friend that does mostly wildlife photography and video with his R5 V 1 & II as his prime lens was the RF 200-800 and he wanted to have something faster for low light situations. I just told him it was my old lens in excellent condition, the women had hardly used it, take it and try try it and see if it will work for you. Two days later he said I'll take it loves it. He paid $2000 CDN.

One thing to note on the 300 f/2.8L IS with video is the noise from the IS unit. It isn't horrible, but you will notice it. You may not care since you may just dub in some other sound track anyway. Aside from that, it is a fantastic lens, and I wouldn't hesitate to use it for any other reason.

Mark 1 is heavier than the 2 and, at least on my used one when I had it, the tripod ring rotation was less smooth. Neither matters on a tripod.

On the noise from the IS unit... if you're keeping the audio I assume you're using a telescopic mic of some kind? My guess is that would eliminate the potential noise issue.

Rudy,

I bought a version 2 about 3 months ago off eBay. I paid $2400, so deals can be had relatively speaking. I haven't taken any video yet but the still images are very nice. I went with the this version to get full FPS capabilities and because it is a little lighter. I have heard great things about version 1 as well.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the helpful and hopeful feedback.... good to know.

Another question I have about the version 1 model is what happens if it needs repairs or other servicing - will Canon still work on such an old lens? As I understand it, even the Mark II will only be support until Nov. 2028.

Thanks,
Rudy
