NiSi 100mm Filter Holder for Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO
I purchased these items for a waterfall workshop. I am using the OM1-mk 2 camera with the Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO lens. These items can be purchased at many locations. A few comments below.
The NISI filter holder fits on easy and solid. Allows filter rotation and locking of the filter ring in any position.
NiSi 100x100mm True Color Square Polarizer slides in easily, and fits nicely. As with all polarizers, the effect changes as you rotate it.
People have said that a camera cannot auto focus with this square filter due to the linear polarization. With my OM1-mk2 the autofocus works just fine in any rotation position.
For waterfalls I manually focus by programming the AF-ON button to “Magnify”. This is not in the menu system, only found when programming buttons. “Magnify” allows you to zoom in, move the joystick to where you want the focus to be and adjust the focus ring to make it sharp.
As shown on NISI webpage, at 7mm there is slight vignetting in the two opposite corners at a 45-degree rotation position, caused by the filter holder.
If you were to reduce the Polarizer effect slightly, there is no vignetting. Most likely for waterfalls I might be at 100 percent Polarizer effect.
Since this is a 2-filter holder and I only want to use one, I removed the second filter slide from the holder to just leave me with the one filter slot, reducing the vignetting. I just want to use the polarizing filter. Now with the second slot removed, at 7mm and rotating the holder ring to 45-degree position, the vignetting is barely visible in opposite corners. Can live with this easily.
If you want to remove the second filter slot, make sure you match the Phillips driver head to the screws to avoid stripping. NISI does use a thread locker on the threads so extra downward effort is needed to unscrew.
The reason I do not need the second slot is that modern OMDS cameras like the OM1-mk2 have features such as neutral density and graduated ND filters built into the camera. For waterfalls I use the built in neutral density filters to get the water pattern I want, but need a Polarizer to hold back the sky reflection in the water. If I need to also add a graduated neutral density filter at the same time, I will just do an HDR by exposure bracketing. The OM1-mk2 does have a built in graduated neutral density filter but cannot use the neutral density filters at the same time.
In summary, this is a great polarizer filter holder for the Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO lens for wide angle image captures. I may not have needed to remove the second filter slot as the polarizer effects are closer to the 90-degree position and not at 45-degree vignetting positions. If using slide-in graduated neutral density filters or neutral density filters, the rotation vignette might be a concern at 7mm.
The OM1-mk2 autofocus works fine with this polarizer filter.
With the use of any wide-angle lens capturing horizontal landscape images that have sky across the image, you will need to be aware of the uneven polarizer effect across the sky.
I will be using this setup for any captures for which I need a polarizer filter in the future.
